Free / open source / cheap diary, planner & CMS

Basically, looking for a free / cheap replacement to Outlook.

It's to store diary dates, meetings, events, etc. Has to be able to plan a year ahead, and potentially link in with a contacts database.

It has to run on Windows so no mac or linux apps.

It *could* be an online applet running on an online server with access to php, SQL DB, etc.

    Any ideas what to recommend.

Oh, and it's for my old man so needs to be easy and intuitive to pick up

    Thanks!

Agree, he already uses Thunderbird for email. But what about calendars, events, meetings, etc? Unless there's a plugin available - I haven't searched to be honest...

edit: just found Lightning. Looking into it now

    http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/

Having said that, I've moved across to Google calendar. Mainly because it syncs with my phone and can be easily integrated into other things thanks to its API.

Re: Free / open source / cheap diary, planner & CMS

    Gmail + Google Calendar.

    or

If he uses Thunderbird already, grab the Lightning addon.

    or

    Mozilla Sunbird

All of the above will sync with Google Calendar too.

edit - loads of tabs open, multi-tasking, etc, seems I was beaten, many times over

I used to use t'bird (still use the email client) + lightening, but have since moved to the google email and calendar offerings for work related stuff as it is easier to schedule meetings with workmates.

Re: Free / open source / cheap diary, planner & CMS

Thunderbird + Lightning isn't bad, but there's a brilliant program called "Evolution" that was Linux-only for years. It was always labelled the "Outlook killer" and works with MS Exchange with no licensing fees required. Not only that but it has a fully integrated PIM and calendar/appointments/meetings diary system.

There's now an up-to-date Windows port of it so you can fill your boots!
    Tux powered!
