    Admin / Policy question

You'll have to excuse the somewhat probably simple question - this is not my area and I'm probably missing something in my understanding.

If you have a standard Windows based network, with users having restricted accounts and no admin rights, would it be possible to allow them to launch a program that specifically needs Administration rights.
For example, if I am logged into a machine and I launch an application that triggers UAC, would it be possible for users with a restricted (non-admin) account to be able to use this application?
Can you allow certain application to run in this higher elevated mode, without needing an admin to enter a password?

    Any comments?

    Cheers

You can set this up using the Application Compatibility Toolkit, which is free from Microsoft. Take a look at this for more info on your particular quandary.

I've heard that it's possible to use task scheduler to achieve this kind of result, but I've never needed to dabble myself.

That works for things like Everest, which require admin privileges to make the relevant system calls - I setup a scheduled task that runs at startup and launches the Everest executable as an administrative user. It sounds more like Agent is wanting a user to invoke an application at will when they're logged in, which would require an app fix using ACT.

ACT is pretty sweet actually, but I trust that there's been some long, hard thought gone into the application in question before deciding to just go ahead and use it as is: ie there's no fix from the vendor?

Yep, every route tried. The software is not your standard desktop software, but rather specialist software that is in the region a million $ to licence under a strict NDA. The vendor is simply saying "It needs admin rights. There is no way around this". We are very lucky to have this contract with them, so we can not be pushy in terms of what we want it to do.
The environment that it's being used in isn't ideal to give everyone admin rights sadly, so ideally this can't happen.

I came across ACT, but didn't look into it much further so thanks for the recomendation Splash

There is a lot more behind it that I can't really go into on a public forum, but I think we have found a solution.

    Cheers all

Nice one - out of interest was ACT your solution, or did you go with something else?

    Re: Admin / Policy question

would it be possible to setup the program with a runas command with /savecred saving an administrator users details, but not letting the user know the credentials...

it would only need to be enterred once - although then there wouldnt be individual user settings within the program if thats what it entails...

just spitballing, might be a simple solution?
