Any method of recovering files lost in transfer?

    Hello,

The other day I did a cut+paste transfer of a pretty large (4GB) video file from my NAS to my PC, but the transfer was interrupted half way through.

I've done a search of both the NAS and the PC hard drive, and I can't find said video file whatsoever. Is there any way to recover the file?

    Thanks,

    Odai.

You could try something like Recuva.

That's weird most cut and paste across different drives are usually just a copy then delete if the transfer succeeds. As Splash suggests you'll have to run some sort of undelete software on the NAS and hope that you haven't written much data to the NAS since it went.

PhotoRec is another one to try.

    Hello,

Thanks a ton for those suggestions guys. I've tried both, but I am unable to run the software to search for files on the NAS.

I've done searches on the PC hard drive, but it's found nothing.

Unless it's in RAID you could take the drive out of the NAS, install it in your PC and run a recovery tool. If it failed halfway though then some of the file will still have been in in buffers/RAM so it's unlikely you'd recover the whole file from the destination. Also is the NAS running a full OS such as Linux? If it is you could run those tools directly on it via SSH or something.
