What error did you get? Did you install windows or linux first? You say when you chose the windows XP bit, can you be a little more specific, like option in Grub or Lilo?

You need to post the error mate...

What bootloader are you using? LILO or Grub?

I believe Mandrake uses Lilo - and there's the problem.

Ever tried to find decent docs on lilo? Heh! Grub is much better, though I'm usually stuck if it doesn't at least partially configure itself.

no - lilo is fine - in fact, recommended (easier to remove, tweak etc)
when booting windows, what is the message which pops up when choosing the "windows" boot option in Lilo?

I think you missed the point of my question - if it's still there, you should be able to regenerate the error. you didn't say you'd reformatted!
besides which, LILO stores backups of the MBR, which you can use to recover your XP install... also if you look in lilo.conf you can see what settings were used - and correct if necessary.

bugger -there are some simple ways to recover - just not well documented. I've had to recover a few installs the hard way!
