    Synctoy 2.1 automated backups

I would like to setup an automated backup to my external hard drive each time it is connected to my PC using Synctoy 2.1. I just have some questions I would like answering first. My external HDD is used in conjuction with my WD Media player and therefore spends most of its time in the living room, I only intend to plug it into the PC once per week. When I do this I would like it to automatically backup all the specified folders directly to the HDD. How do I assign a permanent drive letter to an external HDD and how would I setup an automatic backup on plugin to this drive using Windows 7 home edition.

I've found that with my external HDD it gets assigned a drive letter and always uses that. You could try plugging any other drives, USB pens etc into the computer when your external HDD is in and they'll get given other letters for addressing them and your computer should then keep the letter for the external HDD reserved.

no need for that. Go on the start menu, right click on my computer, click manage, then go onto storage then disk management. Its Window's parition editor. From there you can right click on the external HDD's partitiom and change the drive letter. Assign one of the last ones. I always use W:

In terms of scripting you could write an autorun script, but if you have Avira it disables autorun scripts for security. Synctoy isn't really very good for scripting. I never got it to work very well myself.

    Hope that helps,
    Dan Gent

P.S. Linux rules because it doesn't use drive letters!
