    HFM Monitoring

    Hey guys,

Just installed HFM (http://code.google.com/p/hfm-net/) as a replacement for Fahmon which I previously used, because it calculates Passkey bonuses for SMP files in its PPD estimates which Fahmon doesn't do.

I've got it running nicely on my main PC, monitoring two other windows machines across the network simply using windows shares of the relevant Folding folders

However I've also got an older Core2Duo laptop running Ubuntu with the linux 64bit SMP client. I thought monitoring this would be as simple as sharing the F@H folder with Samba and then adding it to the client. But when I do that this happens:

No dice - even though the client has been running for a while now (up to 13% complete or so). I know that HFM has the facility to update to a ftp server and pull down log files at regular intervals, but this seems more for truly remote monitoring rather than over a LAN. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going wrong?

I had to install some workaround to get the SMP working on 10.04 Ubuntu, could this be something to do with it? Hopefully this will serve as a double purpose post, letting people know about the awesomeness of HFM, and solving my issue!

Oh and I should note I've tried adding the linux client to Fahmon as well, but no luck there either.

    Re: HFM Monitoring

Got it working! I was following two different guides to set up folding on ubuntu, and had two different install locations. Was sharing the wrong one - what a muppet I am

Here's my HFM window now (GPU is on a low PPD WU )

    Re: HFM Monitoring

Sweet points I'm not willing to run folding on my bro's laptop - with the SMP client I've run it at ~95 degrees for a week Well, at least it didn't burn down.

    Re: HFM Monitoring

I previously stuck with Fahmon before as I wasn't SMP folding thus didn't care about the passkey bonus. However, I decided to go with the latest SMP client and thus thought it would be good to try out this program to check my passkey bonus. Much to my surprise, whilst Fahmon reported ~1000 PPD, with the passkey bonus it's actually ~5000 PPD, which doubles my computer's PPD in theory! So, I'll be sticking to my GPU + SMP combo

    Re: HFM Monitoring

I've found that having the smp client on my Q6600 running as well as the GTX 285 cripples the performance of the GTX 285, dropping from just shy of 10k ppd to 3-5k ppd, so I'm going to disable the smp client as of tonight and go back to just the GPU client.

    Re: HFM Monitoring

Set the affinity of your smp client to use only 3 cores, then you will have an entire core to feed your gpu (not sure what the utilization is for nvidia folding, my 4850 client uses 1-5% cpu time max after fiddling with the ev's so I just leave my smp going on all 4)

    Re: HFM Monitoring

Interesting, my SMP client doesn't seem to have effected my GPU's PPD at all - checking the log file, it's still taking the same time to do 1 percent of the same work units that Ive been getting. I can only assume that's because the 8800GT is decidedly less nippy than a GTX 285! Still, turning the affinity down to 3 cores I think would be the best course of action
