How can I duplicate a CD for free?

Hi all I have a music CD with some audio on of my own, so I can copy it legally and stuff.

I just want to duplicate it so I can give a copy to some other people. I read that in Vista you can put it in, tell WMP to rip it, and then have WMP burn a new CD with whatever it ripped. Unfortunately for me in Win7, the rip option doesn't appear in auto play.

Does anyone know a quick and easy way for me to do this without buying anything? Thanks!

So how did you get the audio on it in the first place? Can't you just do that again?

Rip doesn't come up in autoplay for me (Win7) it does come up when inserting a cd though (above the main window bit inside WMP)

Re: How can I duplicate a CD for free?

I just wanted to say ripping an audio CD on WMP is a bad way of copying a CD, it will compress the audio from the CD using .wma by default (a lossy codec). It's probably not going to be noticeable after one go provided WMP rips using a decent bitrate but if that's repeated a few times it can really impact the quality of the audio, especially if it's played using high-end gear. Either way it's nearly always better to do a proper copy with something like ImgBurn as recommended above.

Should be fine when it's your own stuff.

I would use Imgburn, as Gonzo recommended.

But did you get permission in writing, you might forget you gave yourself permission and take legal action.

IMHO stupid laws should be broken, thats how they get changed. Even the BBC has how to articles on backing up music, and plenty of journalists have openly admit to the heinous crimes of recording stuff from the radio, ripping Cd's to use on mp3 players, and the travesty of listening to the radio in the office without buying a special license. I suspect the reason journalists admitting to these crimes go unpunished is that copyright holders fear the law being altered in favour of the consumer. And very survey I have read suports the idea that those who download, rip music, etc, also buy more music.

I do love the way that people think that piracy is something new, in the 70s/80s/90s everybody recorded stuff off the radio, tape decks (often made by sony) featured a button to copy from one tape to another, and some had high speed synchro to do it quicker. Now we get Sony, etc complaining about people copying stuff when its always been them that sell and make the kit to do it.

Ripping a music CD is not legal in the UK .... unless you either own copyright to the content, or have permission to copy from whoever does. As that is extremely unlikely (though, technically, not impossible) with respect to commercial material, it's almost always true that it would be illegal, at least in the sense of infringing copyright, for commercially bought CDs.

Of course, it;s also the case that, technically, whether acrobat can copy the disc legally also depends on quite what he means by "some audio on of my own". Acrobat may have created the audio, but he doesn't necessarily own the copyright. Generally, the creator does, at least in the first instance, own copyright, buy one of the major exceptions to that is if it was created as part of his employment, in which case the employer will own copyright.

And to take it one step further, while an employer usually owns the copyright for works created by an employee, that is usually not the case where you hire someone for a specific job. If you hire a photographer to take pictures, you get the pictures you paid for, but they own the copyright. If you hire a web designer to create a website, you get the site but they own copyright, meaning you will have limited ability to alter or copy parts of the content.

And in those types of examples, the usual "employer" relationship doesn't apply, but if the contract you agree or the work stipulates who gets copyright, then it would indeed be the person doing the hiring if the contracts says that. For instance, I own the copyright to my wedding photos, not the photographer.

Anyway, the point of all this .... if acrobat owns the copyright (and I assume he does), he can copy, rip, sample and amend all he wants. The legality of doing all these things rests on who owns copyright.

I get your point, and by and large agree.

But it's worth pointing out that there's nothing inherently illegal about dual tape (or disc) decks decks that can copy tapes or discs, any more than there is about PC CD and DVD burners that can copy disks, or about peer to peer networking systems that allow file transfers. It's not the technology that's illegal, it's when you use it for illegal things.

Also, it's not necessarily illegal to record from radio or TV. For a start, there are time-shifting provisions with respect to broadcast material, such as TV and radio programs. Also, you mention "journalists", and it's worth remembering that copies can be legal for journalists, depending on what the use of the copy is, that would not be legal for others. It's one of the fair dealing exemptions to the Copyright statutes, if it's for review, criticism or news reporting.

As I said, I get your point. But in several of the examples you give, it's more complex than it might first appear. As a journalist, one of the things I have to be aware of, and careful with, is when I copy something, does that copy fall within permitted uses. because it's about the use, not just being a journalist, as that is not a licence to copy. We get some latitude, but it's not a free-for-all.

I was somewhere around 10 years old at this point and spend a good portion of my pocket money on games for it in John Menzies and Boots.... but a C90 was a lot less money. You also used to get some great cover tapes on magazines in those days too

Re: How can I duplicate a CD for free?

Jornalist wise I was thinking more about this chap than any kind of research material
    http://www.independent.co.uk/life-st...er-769184.html

Some countrys appear to have this sorted out, from a quick search Australia allow you to backup and change from one format to another.

My Dad worked in the stock room of a local Boots at the time they were dropping tape games from the inventory, he told me they were chucking all the games in the bin, so over the course of a week I skip raided to get them, ended up with 2 bin bags full of the tapes. Probably still some stashed in a cupboard back at my parents.
