Wow I can't believe people still buy Nortan lol.

If you have a Barclays online bank account you get a three user licence of Kaspersky for free
This is what I use.
For truly free I've also used Microsoft Security essentials, admittedly not for long but I installed and used it based on the glowing recommendations of this very forum
MSSE *is* free, has good detection, is lightweight (uses very little resource), and does anti-virus right: that is to say it keeps it's head down unless it thinks you've got a problem. Use it on all my home PCs now and very happy with it.
Have people really lost the ability to use search engines?
Another Nod32 user here!! (I have Eset Smart Security - which is the antivirus and firewall in one)
Small resource footprint and seems to keep everything nasty off my system.
Another thumbs up for AVAST, I can't speak highly enough of the product.
C.
I was chatting to a Russian programmer recently and he claimed that DrWeb was better than Kaspersky but, he did not say why.
I used Norton on my Laptop last year and it got some kind of an infection in no time while using a hotel's wifi.
I pay for McAfee & Malwarebytes and 'right click, scan' everything I download, never had any problems. McAfee sits in the background & doesn't bother anyone! Unlike Norton (which came free with our laptop) it constantly needs the user to 'block'/'always allow'/etc but never remembers your last answer!
The Free option i would always use would be Avira or Avast
I currently use Nod 32 which is superb imo,Kasperky is also very good, these 2 AVs are rated the best on the market
Check out AV Comparatives who do regular reviews on AV detection rates (the proactive/retrospective tests are of particular interest since they show how well AVs can perform against unknown malware).
However many AVs also include some form of behaviour blocking (limiting actions like monitoring the keyboard or accessing the Internet). This can be more effective for a knowledgeable user (someone who knows what software his system should be running) but the program interface is critical - Kaspersky's Internet Security Suite for example, does cover such things but doesn't tell you what was blocked and why, making subsequent troubleshooting harder.
You dont agree that Nod 32 and Kaspersky are the best AVs available then?
These both have the best detections rates and this is a fact i believe
These both are also very good for not slowing the PC down unlike other AVs,Norton springs to mind
This is not a dig just a question
Because i thought it was common knowledge amongst PC enthusiasts that Nod 32 and Kaspersky are by far the best AVs available.
Most enthuatists/users would not need to do a lot of research to know this, sorry maybe im being a little arrogant saying this?
MSE is not brilliant btw its very light on resources for a reason, its detection rates are not that great,my experience anyway

Or.. you could read the site linked, see some more thorough independent testing, and revise your outdated opinion of MSE
I think most enthusiasts would look up properly researched and conducted tests, just as they do for other hardware and software components that they use. AV software/definitions change in performance even more rapidly than hardware does, and I don't think you'd find many people still recommending Pentium Pros as a top CPU choice.
