    Which Anti-Virus software to use?

OK my purchased copy of AVG is coming to an end soon and I'm in the market to see if there is anything better around?

In the past AVG has let me down allowing web scripts to run causing my PC to be infected before it can detect the threat. I had heard Kaspersky was pretty good but recent PC Pro reviews suggest Norton.

Now I've always had this image of Norton as a memory hungry program and not the best. Do other people have any suggestions on what to use? I know I could go down the Free AVG route but wouldn't mind paying for the peace of mind.

For free AV, I use both Avira and Avast (on different machines) and am happy with both.

Re: Which Anti-Virus software to use?

I used to exclusively use AVG, but got sick of the clunky interface with all the ads they brought in, I then got a year of Kaspersky, which worked well and now I use Avast, I would recommend Kaspersky or Avast to anyone, and have done on many occasions.

Edit: PC Pro are suggesting Norton these days??? well at least I know not to buy a copy of that mag when I am bored. Though Norton works, and is updated often enough, it and McAffe gets targeted a lot more by virus coders looking for ways to sneak past av software simply because of their prevalence, and it used to be a huge memory hog as well because they bundled the entire internet suite thing with it and loaded it all into ram at boot, no idea what memory it uses these days.

I use Avast and have done for ages.

People seem to recomending Microsoft Security Essentials a lot these days, but I think that's just for the ease of use and maintenance.

For me it's the high detection rate and low overheads.

Lots of people have already asked the same thing on Hexus though, this is very recent for example:

Re: Which Anti-Virus software to use?

I tried MSE but it never loaded at boot properly despite several clean outs and reinstalls. Im sticking with my AVG free on the 3 PCs here and all the PCs in Northants that I look after (about 12 now).
    Cheers, David

Re: Which Anti-Virus software to use?

I use eset Nod 32 (it does 32 and 64 bit versions)...it's really quiet...sits in the background and doesn't use any resourse other than boot up.

I've never had any conflicts. Updates every hour near enough.

And if you are prepared to uninstall and reinstall every month is free. Although I am feeling a tad guilty after 3 years of freebie and may actually pay them next download.
Of course I'm perfect you just need to lower your expectations.

    Agreed - if you've got Barclay's you're covered.

    Otherwise...

Indeed it is simple - install and leave - but it's good too. The only complaint (which is also a positive depending on your perspective) is that it's lacking in options and customisation, but if all you need is an AV solution and don't need to exclude areas or set up rules and such, it's fine.

To give an example of how good it is, here is my sole complaint... just after installing is prompts you to install the latest definitions straight away, and doesn't let you change options (to disable the scheduled scan, which I always disable personally) until that first definition update has completed. That's it.

Personally I use NOD32, but mainly because it's what I've known for years now, and I'm happy to pay for it. I'd be happy to use the Kaspersky I can get for free (that Barclay's offer) or frankly MSE would be perfectly adequate for me.

Re: Which Anti-Virus software to use?

I like kaspersky as a company but their software can be quite heavy.

the latest norton is surprising good. norton 2003-2008 was crap but 2009 and 2010 are good.
this is coming from someone who used to hate Norton. can get a year license for the av one user on amazon for around £9

I currently use f-secure which is heavy but if you have got a decent enough computer its very good.

whatever antivirus you use I would reccomend using one or two of the following as on demand scanners.
    mbam
    superantispyware
    emsisoft emergency kit
    hitman pro

Do you have to get an activation code every month??? I might try on a spare laptop just to see how good it is.

I have been using KIS 2010. Mate who's got an account with Barclays gave me 1-code for 2 years and last year I bought a 5-PC copy for £8.99 at The Works. KIS 2011 has had lots of problems even after release of CF1, so I still put my upgrade on hold.

I've got a dormant savings with Barclays and will check whether I can register for online banking and get the freebie.
