Firefox being a complete & utter swine!

Got bit of a problem. Firefox refuses to work – whenever my mate tries to open it, it immediately closes – even running the application in safe mode, it still crashes. I have told him to do the following –

Ran Avast to scan for viruses – picked up nothing
Ran Malwarebytes – picked up one item which is “Vendor = Disabled.SecurityCenter Category = Registry Data”
Ran spybot S&D – did it’s usual business
Ran ccleaner – cleaned the history and the registry
Installed a older version of firefox

After all of the above, Firefox still refuses to work. However, if windows is in Safe Mode then firefox seems happy and doesn’t crash.

Does anyone know how this can be resolved or what else can be used to get this thing sorted?

It is a Windows XP machine (service pack 2).

    Re: Firefox being a *****

What's logged in the application and system logs when this happens?

Re: Firefox being a complete & utter swine!

Thanks mate. After looking at a couple screenshots, i dont think any error is being logged on both the application and system logs.

Another issue now is Chrome will not work. I asked him to install Safari or Opera - Safari installer fails however Opera installs but doesn't work just like Chrome and Firefox.

Looking under application log he has noticed the following -

"error where source = Google Update"
    and
    "warning where source = usernv"

Does this help at all? There doesn't seem to be anything else logged.

    P.S. On a side note, IE6 works

Erm... tbh with the way this is looking I'd be tempted to rebuild the machine. One application crashing? Unfortunate: let's fix it. 2 apps? Hmm... possibly linked... 4 (and all of them browsers)? Something smells fishy.

You *could* try putting the Windows CD in the drive and running

    sfc /scannow

from a command prompt. This will scan your system for corrupted Windows files. If any are detected as corrupted they'll be replaced from the install media: once this is done you need to run Windows Update to update any files which should have been patched.

    Thanks for your help.

Yeah something obviously went wrong somewhere - i told him to uninstall flash which still didnt fix it. Luckily his laptop has a recovery partition for when Windows fails like this

I have had good experiences with resolving things like this using the details on the forum "majorgeeks.com" Within their forum, there is an FAQ of things to do before seeking their help. Once you have run through the check lists,, you will usually find all is well.

Re: Firefox being a complete & utter swine!

Only since the latest 3.6.8 update, FireFox will crash at random intervals. Sometimes as soon as I open it, others whilst I am reading an email in Gmail, others on the BBC site etc. For now I have dumped it until 4 lands (non-beta) and moved to Chrome for now. Seems the only browser that works flawlessly for now. Tried Opera 10.6 but just didn't get on with it at all.

I'd do a reinstall and put SP3 on it. Easiest solution and does give the usual small speed benefit of a fresh install.
