    Where to find a programer?

Hi guys, the company I work for is currently trying to find someone to help maintain our website as there's a couple of features the previous developers are broken and they're more advanced than my own abilities to fix.

The site is written in PHP/MySQL, it's a fairly basic setup with a couple of advanced features, the main thing that isn't working at the moment is the PDF upload routine. Ultimately we'll be looking for someone to integrate the site with Microsoft NAV (aka Microsoft Dynamics), but definately need to get some of the main bits repaired properly.

If you also know where I might ask around for programers, it'd be appreciated.

There used to be a website for that kind of thing - something like freelancers.co.uk I think. Or use google, although that will tend to bring up the larger companies before individuals looking for projects.

You could try advertising for a temp / part time developer perhaps? Or try some agencies?

Or, you could PM me with some more details ( ), but I'm pretty busy at the minute and don't have much time for freelancing

Ah the NAV thing will be the hard bit to find. PHP developers are ten a penny due to the low standards often required. However if you want someone who is actually elegant in what they create (ie low bug, high re-usability, low maintenance cost) then get ready to pay!

You can find them via agencies, posting directly on job websites, you can even try the likes of the dreaded freelance sites if you want it outsourced.

Re: Where to find a programer?

To be honest, the site's a mess of code as it is, particularly as the last programer was dead set on the idea of "code reusability" by which he meant his SQL statements were built by nesting a dozen different variables together. I'm pretty sure some of it belongs on thedailywtf.com to be honest....

Anyhow, mostly we're looking for a compromise between cheap and fast, over good code, as the site has already cost over the odds for the broken crap that it is (around £20,000ish)

Where is the company located? I know a few people who might be able to help if it’s in the (Greater) London area.

As much as I dislike them, in this industry agents are probably the way to go. Not a fan of open freelance sites. Although there are good people there, I have to insert my personal bias and ask why a good developer would work cheaply?

In London, any developer cheaper than £300/day (more if short term or adhoc) isn’t likely to be very good and/or particularly experienced. At the £400/day or more mark you’re starting to move into decent quality but that’s never a guarantee either (just finished a load of interviews for a C# developer). Outside of London you can probably drop the scale by £50-75 depending on location.

For an adhoc or very short term job, you may need to pay a premium (could be 25-50%+) over standard day rates.
