    VMWARE and windows7

Why is it that when I install vmware workstation in xp I get this

    VMWARE NETWORK ADAPATER VMNET1

Yet when I install it in Windows 7 it says connected to local area connection or something along those lines?

How do you get it to be a proper adapter

VMNet1 is by default a host only connection (ie all machines connected to that virtual network are only connected internally, and have no external connectivity). Essentially they're the same thing under both OSen, but the wording is slightly clearer under Win7 (it states Host-Only)

Make sense? As for making it to be a "proper adapter" I guess you mean with external connectivity? If so then you either select NAT (in which case all VMs on that network will share the "public" address of your PC) or Bridged (in which case all VMs will have an address on your normal LAN, and will have their addresses assigned by DHCP (probably by your broadband router)

    Thanks !

I actually want something connecting to the adapter ( so vmnet 1 )

In xp if i go into show all connections in control panel I get a "proper" adapter that says VMware Network Adapter VMnet1 , and if I double click it I have the ip address etc etc.

Yet I can't do this in windows 7 show all connections as there is no actual proper adapter. It's like hitched onto the local area network, its not an independant adapter..

It looks like you're using VMWare Workstation 6.x. Have you tried installing the v7 demo to see it has the same problem?

Workstation v7 was released after Windows 7, so v6 might have random problems running under a Win7 host.
