Lightbulb Querying BIOS to obtain information...

I need to pull Dell service tags from BIOS.

Any idea how this can be done?

One pointer though - whatever method you come up with it cannot be using WMI...

Ideally I want to pull the service tag and save it to a file [easily done]

    Ideas?

You can do it with vbs or powershell although they both use wmi to gather the data.
Do you specifically need to avoid wmi as a mechanism or can you not use wmic?

You can get some information under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Hardware\Description\System but I'm not near a Dell at the moment to check if the service tag is stored in there....
Will have a look and drop a reply up tomorrow when I am though.

WMI support under BartPE is very flaky to say the least...

I've been fighting with it for quite some time now.

Registry entries will be no good as its Bart's own registry once its booted up.

WinAudit works ok but not all Dells. Aida32 works just great but I'm having problems filtering the data to I can end up with just the service tag..

    No use?

Ah, just saw that you specify "no WMI" - any reason for this?

No joy in registry....have found these though:

    http://www.dell.com/downloads/global...0-Chaganti.pdf

The sysinfo.exe app at the next link looks particularly useful with the --asset switch:
--asset Reports the asset tag for a system.

    Hope it does the job....
