    XP services information

I've just reinstalled XP on my laptop and managed to disable networking by killing too many services. Back in the day I remember a website that listed all the services, what they actually do and whether they were needed. It also had a handy registry download that put this information in the management console. I have vague memories of this being called something like 'black widow', but can't for the life of me find it now.

Anyone else remember what I'm talking about and remember the name properly? Failing that is their a similar sight around which isn't just lame-ware like all the web searches throw up?

    Re: XP services information

I don't know if you're aware already, but most of the real-world testing I saw regarding BlackViper's tweaks for XP showed that it, more often than not, reduced performance.

It saved a few MB of RAM, but never anything sufficient to compensate for the reduced performance. Can't remember the link now, but it was quite interesting.

I used to follow his tweaks religiously until I read up on a few investigations.

    Re: XP services information

I just like to turn off the most useless ones, but somehow managed to break my network on the way. Used to trim down to 18/19 services running but now 25 or so is fine. I couldn't say I noticed a performance difference either way tbh, but turning off worrying things such as remote registry and annoying things such as the security centre is always nice.
