Image backup other than Acronis and Norton

    Hello:

Sometimes, if not most often, software companies get worse as they get bigger. Acronis has constantly made changes to its True Image to make it impossible for users to back up X images (X = 1, 2, 3 ...) and then, when X backups is reached, and the X+1 backup is created, the oldest backup is deleted.

Another development is that they have added utilities to the basic function, to the extent that it has become confusing.

I have had it with True Image (and I do not want Ghost), and I am sure I am not alone. Is there any free or non-free image backup software that lets it users do what they want, and which works well (even when recovering the image after a fatal crash)?

    Looking forward to suggestions.

    Hans L

Re: Image backup other than Acronis and Norton

I use Acronis myself and don't really have an issue with it but I know the following have a good reputation around the forums:

    Clonezilla

    http://www.clonezilla.org/

    EASEUS Todo Backup

    http://www.todo-backup.com/products/

Both the above are free as far as I'm aware.

Another that gets good press is Macrium Reflect

    http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp

The full version is about £20 but they have brought out a free version recently but I'm not sure what features are missing in the free one.

Hope this is of some help.

Re: Image backup other than Acronis and Norton

well, I've been using Acronis for about the last 5 years and before that I used Powerquest V2i and Norton ghost.

I don't have any problems at all with Acronis TI and you can adjust the setting to suit yourself. But, I have heard good things about Paragon and Cobian.

Windows Back-up seems to work according to what people have said.

I've never seen that working properly, neither on vista or on 7.

At work we use Vertas BackupExec to maintain our backups; gives you all the options you could possibly want but it isn't cheap unfortunately.

Working absolutely fine here. In what way do you see it "not working properly"?

Re: Image backup other than Acronis and Norton

Good to hear from you, guys.

Does anyone have TI working so that it only makes full backups, and deletes the oldest backup when it has reached the max number of backups you have set?

I used to have it working when you could set "Create a new full backup after 0 (ZERO) incremental or differential backups". Now, the minimum you can set is 1 (ONE). Is there another way?

    To clarify, I want

    Full backup 1
    Full backup 2
    Full backup 3
    Full backup 4

and when Full backup 5 has been created, full backup 1 is deleted. That way, I always have 4 full backups, an extra security if I discover that my latest backup is corrupt, and that it was corrupted a few days ago (the earliest existing backup may then be fine).

    Best regards,

    Hans L

I've still got TI Home installed on this box. Running a test full backup now, will see about setting up as you ask and post back in a bit (which probably means tomorrow tbh, backup will take a couple of hours as it is)

    Hans,
Is this what you want to setup: "Number of backups exceed:"

Pardal pretty much beat me to it - in TrueImage Home 11 goto tool>management>manage backup locations and archives, point to wherever you're backing up to, specify a maximum of (in your case) 4 backups. Now when backup 5 completes backup 1 is deleted.

    Not so bad, see?

Pardal51, yes, that is one of the settings I have. Does not work (at least not in combination with the other settings I have).

Why don't you clear your "combination" settings and try again using the "Number of backups exceed" option

Maybe if you are running a FULL everynight with "Number of backups exceed": 5 and "Keep old backups": >4 days; the age setting is overwriting the number of sets setting.

Re: Image backup other than Acronis and Norton

I have "Backup method" set to Full, "A new full backup overwrites the previous one" *not* checked, and then, I have checked "Number of backups exceeds" and set it to 4 in "Automatic consolidation". It does not work.

As I mentioned, previously, there was the workaround to set "Create a new full backup after 0 incremental or differential backups", but now, you can not set this value to 0, only to 1 (min.), so you get an incremental backup, which I do not want.

It seems as if Acronis is hellbent on enforcing incremental/differential backups. If that is the case, I will say bye to them.

    Regards,

    Hans L
