Wwin 7 system image restore. Satisfied?

I just finished having a fight with Acronis TI home. I lost and retired hurt. Abominable software and an abominable company. I successfully restored a system image generated by my win7 (64) os on a replacement HD however - although for reasons too boring to recount, ended up doing a full clean build on top of it.
I was wondering how Win 7 users feel about the OS's own image create/restore application? Is it good enough to rely on (yes, of course, is anything - relatively speaking)? Put another way, who is satisfied with it and who isn't and why?
Not clear to me how to insert a poll here but something along the lines:
    Happy
    Not happy
    use additional application
    other

Re: Wwin 7 system image restore. Satisfied?

I use the built in version now, though I use TrueImage for other machines it seemed silly to spend money on a license when the OS has a tool that performs a similar job. Still use TrueImage for my laptop though. I've done a few test restores (testing should *always* play a part in your backup regime) and had no problems.

Out of interest what's your beef with TrueImage? You're the second person in as many weeks to post complaining about it, and I'd be interested to know why. In my experience (and that of a number of members here, as well as other IT professionals) Acronis have been a solid company with solid software for a number of years.

    None of those options.

Never used Windows 7 backup, always used Windows Home Server backup client. Never needed to test it, so no idea if it works, but meant to be excellent.

Re: Wwin 7 system image restore. Satisfied?

    New option.
Use W7 image as one of the back ups, but would likely to a clean install and replace the data.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

Re: Wwin 7 system image restore. Satisfied?

I've been using Ti for the last 5 or so years. I can't complain about it. It has always worked for me regardless of raid set-up etc.

I did use the Windows back up to create a back up but, I never tried to restore from it so I cannot comment on how good it is.

I have to admit I think the later versions of Acronis Ti have become too bloated and not so easy to use imho.

Just tried to restore a system image on another system last week and it wasn't picking up the image at all... it just wouldn't see it. I went round and round in circles for 2 days until, ironically, Acronis TI Home restored the Microsoft backup from the VHD files it creates.

I use Acronis at work and simply can't fault it.

Re: Wwin 7 system image restore. Satisfied?

I have successfully used the imaging that comes with windows 7 restoring images successfully multiple times.
I dont currently use it because i brought image for windows for when i had vista home premium so seems pointless not to use the software i brought.
Acronis is the only imaging product that didnt work on multiple computers i tryed it on.

Windows Home Server does the job for me.
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

0iD: Plus weeing in it every now & again does it good
scaryjim: 10" is just a little large to hold comfortably in one hand, which makes it a lot harder to tap, swipe and generally interact with.

Had a failing disk in a raid 1 set which I scragged and replaced with a mirrored pair. Used Windows image backup for that with no problems.

I just use a Acronis TI 10 boot cd to create images of my hdds, the only time I have installed the TI program was to create backup boot cds, just don't feel comfortable creating images within the windows OS.

It's very slow and has some irritating quirks from time to time so I use other software.

Re: Wwin 7 system image restore. Satisfied?

I made an interesting discovery with one of my Server 2008 x64 test boxes over the weekend - I tried restoring a system image made with Windows Backup so I booted from the install media, pointed the system recovery at the backup image and... was prompted that the version of system recovery was unable to restore the backup. After a spot of Googling it turns out that the "fix" was to boot from a Vista install disc, which worked fine. I've filed a bug, but it does seem the sort of thing that should have been picked up in testing.

Re: Wwin 7 system image restore. Satisfied?

I had issues with true image recently, total friggin nightmare to get working properly! I remember it used to be a pretty streamlined little piece of software. I ended up just using W7 image making software but i havent tried restoring it yet. I think im going to be switching to an SSD soon so i would be interested in hearing peoples suggestions for alternatives.

Re: Wwin 7 system image restore. Satisfied?

I've just ordered 2 new hard drives for machines at work and will be attempting to image & restore them using the Win 7 built in backup and restore, so I'll come back and let y'all know how I got on

I quite fancy switching work over to FOG, having read up on it, but since we're on the main university network I don't really have the option of messing around with their DHCP servers... *sigh*

I think im going to be switching to an SSD soon
I *believe* that Win 7 will only restore to a hard drive that is *at least* as large as the original, so you may have issues imaging a HDD system partition back to a SSD.

    *quick google*

Hmmm, Macrium Reflect free edition looks promising. Seems to be a reasonable subset of functionality compared to their paid-for product. Their knowledge base also provides instructions on restoring to a smaller partition than the original which might be useful when transitioning to an SSD...

Re: Wwin 7 system image restore. Satisfied?

Macrium free is good, very fast and reliable but not being able to restore to smaller drives is a worry sometimes as you need a working OS to use Roborestore on or the paid versions Windows PE disc (free doesn't have this). I'm thinking of buying it for the incrementals, PE disc and space management.

Acronis True Image 2011 I'm trying at the moment, I definitely prefer it to previous versions. It has a much nicer UI and just seems to be a lot less clunky and more straightforward but still has all the useful tools like try & decide, nonstop backup and their clone tool.

ShadowProtect is great. As robust and effective as Macrium but with a lot more functionality.
