    USB Toolkits

Below are some of the programs I keep on my USB stick just as useful software if people don't have it, or for troubleshooting. Do any of you have a similar device/suggestions for me to add? Currently I've mainly just got it as ones for useful programs to save downloading them. This could be combined with/used in conjuction with the Hexus Freeware list

    Trouble Shooting:
    Auslogic Disk Defrag
    SpeedFan
    CCleaner
    UBCD

    Useful Software:
    Firefox
    FoxitReader
    K-lite-codec pack/Shark007
    Open Office
    Avast
    Spybot Seach+Destroy
    Steam
    Thunderbird
    Winrar (32+64bit)

    Re: USB Toolkits

UBCD - set up to boot from the pendrive. This means if you ever want to update the BIOS, you can just copy the file to the USB stick and flash from there UBCD is fantastic.

As for codec packs - without wanting to sound like a broken record, but K-lite has given me a stupid number of issues in the past. I won't go as far as to recommend a codec pack, but the only one I've ever come across that seems to 'just work' is Shark007's : http://shark007.net/index.html
There is no way I would ever install K-lite on someone elses machine, purely due to it almost being certain that they'll need me as tech support again when a codec misbehaves.

Added Yeah, sounds good. I've never really used or flashed BIOS etc so haven't really tried it.

Oh it's wayyy more powerful than that. It pretty much has every tool on you need for checking HDs, Ram, CPU, etc...just fantastic. Make sure you give it a spin one of the afternoon. It's been a lifesaver many times over

I can genuinely say that VLC isn't much use if you want or need to use a "proper" HTPC front-end, eg WMC, MediaPortal.

More importantly, it has a silly icon.

No, which is one of the main reasons I won't 'recommend' any codec pack. My girlfriend on the other hand watches some anime that won't play alone in VLC, but I think they are just badly encoded (as much as she likes to argue they ain't )

But as above, for a media centre (we use one in the front room with the TV) it's a different matter.

    i think its silly too...

IMHO you can never have enough codecs, yes VLC plays a lot but its still nice having the ability to play stuff in other programs, and as stated media centre +VLC =Pants!

    Re: USB Toolkits

vlc is too slow, cccp and be done with it, add real alternative if you need rmvb playback and/or coreavc for (fastest)h264 hd playback.

    I keep a copy of:
    malware bytes
    hijack this
    ardc data recovery tools

Given how bad Windows manages codecs, you want the minimal number that you can installed.

    Re: USB Toolkits

I always keep a copy of the SysInternals suite to hand - if pressed for space on a usb pen then at least Process Monitor and Process Explorer. Very handy for troubleshooting.
An extracted copy of 7zip, Putty, Firefox and FileZilla are also useful.
