Software for taking Measurements from camera Images?

I am going to stick a camera on a microscope to make measurements of
threads, I wondered if there was a program that would work well for this?
I would be able to take a known measurement in the image to relate
    and scale any others taken.
I was going to import the pics to solidworks and use them as sketch
pictures, but there is probably a programme which will do it better.

All the software I have used has been supplied by either the microscope or camera manufacturer. after a quick google there does appear to be 3rd party, and possibly some freeware stuff that does the same. A quick and dirty option is to use a calibration slide, then copy that as an overlay, as long as the magnification doesent change, and you dont fiddle you can create an overlay that will allow you to meassure. In the dim and distant past I did QA on optical kit, we had a transparency with ruler markings drawn on stuck to a screen to meassure calibration slides.
