bootmgr is missing Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Hi all. I solved this problem already but I was hoping to find out what caused it in the first place.

It's a Win7 64bit computer. I was using my computer yesterday and all of a sudden it stuttered and then the screen went blank and then it shut down. When it tried to reboot, it said, "bootmgr is missing Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" during the bios process. F8 didn't work so I had to make a windows repair CD on another computer and then reboot on mine using that, and the repair seemed to do the job.

I am just wondering if anyone here knows what caused it in the first place? I'm using a SSD so I wondered if it might have been something to do with that. I have 4gig of RAM and the SSD is 80gig with 21gig free.

Re: bootmgr is missing Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Just a guess but, possibly a bad connection on the plugs to the SSD or a problem with the SSD. Which make and model is the SSD ?

I got a similar message on booting after swapping around the drives because it could not find the bootmgr on the HDD that was at the top of the list.

Re: bootmgr is missing Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

    It's the intel 80 gig gen 2.

I tried googling it and I saw someone mention it might be caused by lack of space or lack of ram, but neither seems to be an issue to me. I'd love to know so that I can prevent it happening again, and to rule out any components about to die or something.

Maybe you could check the crash dump file ?

Re: bootmgr is missing Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Not sure how to do that.

I did find a reliability page which has a couple of red x that says "Windows was not shut down properly" and "windows failed to start" and it says it has no other information and is unable to determine the cause.

Re: bootmgr is missing Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

I think what's happened is that you're lost either the MBR or the partition boot sector(s). It depends on whether that message is coming from the BIOS or from Windows. I think it's a Windows message, which means the MBR is OK, but it's got as far as the partition it was hoping to boot from and couldn't find the partition boot sector. Or it can find the boot sector but was missing files from the root partition like \bootmgr.

I recently had a similar thing on an XP partition that had somehow got a Win7 bootloader on it, and insisted on trying to boot 7 from the XP partition (7 uses a different boot system from XP, so this doesn't work). I fixed it by copying the first 16 sectors (8KB) from another XP partition which replaced the 7 bootloader with the XP version.

Re: bootmgr is missing Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Yeah it was just so weird because my computer actually shut off abruptly while I was using it. And then as it tried to reboot I got the message. It makes me wonder what happened at that moment to make it shut down and corrupt the bootup stuff.

Re: bootmgr is missing Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Other possibility is a virus could have corrupted/deleted the MBR; also possible is that the computer shut down abruptly whilst writing a change to the same section of the drive as the MBR and thus corrupted the data.

IIRC with wear leveling on SSD's, theres always a small risk of data loss if the computer shuts down without notice as it may be in the middle of moving data from one section to another.

Re: bootmgr is missing Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

I've got MS Security Essentials reporting nothing nasty, so hopefully it's not a virus. That SSD thing is interesting. It's possible some unrelated thing caused the PC to shut down and then the boot sector got messed up in the process.

Re: bootmgr is missing Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Anyone found a solution to the above problem? Formatted a OCZ Vertex SSD and when trying to do a fresh install of Win 7 i get the message 'bootmgr is missing Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart'.

Is this an SSD problem or win 7? I am trying to do a new install.

    All help will be appreciated.

Re: bootmgr is missing Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Are you using a restore disk or an install disk, if you are using a restore disk it may need to create a mini partition for the loader, then have windows 7 on the large one.

Re: bootmgr is missing Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

I am using an install disk OEM version.

I previously had Win XP Pro on the SSd, before reformatting it. When trying to install Win 7 i get the bootmgr error. I assume wrongly it would be a clean install.

If a need a loader, where can i get one from, as my disk won't load at all.

Re: bootmgr is missing Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Did you delete all the partitions from the disk before you did your install? I had a problem when I told it to install on what was already there and it failed, I removed the partitions got it to create them and there was no problem.
