    Windows 7 Student upgrades

Is it within the spirit and /or letter of the law to perform a windows 7 upgrade install on a new build computer if my old (now inoperable) computer had xp on it. After all, I had a legal copy of XP and will no longer be using it.

Depends what licence the old machine had, if it was an OEM one it is NOT transferable to a new machine, so would not be suitable as a qualifing upgrade for the new machine.

    Welcome to HEXUS paulcounter.

As oolon says. If your XP licence was an OEM product then it is not transferable to any other machine other than the original machine.

However there is no supported upgrade path from XP to Windows 7 anyway - you have to do a clean install, so there would be no advantage in installing XP first.

And finally, the product licence key is unlikely to work with any version of Windows 7.

However the student version is quite good value for money as it stands
