    Outlook - resolving

    Afternoon!

[Mailserver] - [LAN] - [Aramiska Box] - [Internet] - [Freeuk ISP] - [Dialup Laptop w98se]

    1) Our Aramiska box has port forwarding, so we can connect to our internal e-mail server from the internet.
    2) We have a no-ip.org entry (wowch.no-ip.org) pointing to the public IP of the aramiska box (123.456.789.101).
    3) Our domain server has a zone entry for wowch.no-ip.org pointing to 192.168.0.4
    4) The e-mail client on the laptop points to wowch.no-ip.org for POP3 and SMTP.

This means that when the laptop is on the LAN, it will resolve wowch.no-ip.org to 192.168.0.4 and when it is on the internet, it resolves it to 123.456.789.101

Ok, the problem... When using the internet, the laptop just will not connect to the email server, our mailserver traffic log shows it doesn't even try. However, if I telnet to wowch.no-ip.org port 25/110 it works.

If I tracert wowch.no-ip.org and straight after send and recieve in outlook, it works. :/

Anyone have any idea why this may be the case, and more importantly, how can I resolve it?

    Cheers

Edit> The laptop is running windows 98 SE, I'll try from my XP machine when i get home tonight.

    hmmmm
if you are on the LAN its caching the DNS, so that wowch.no-ip.org is pointing to the local address for the mail server.

when you go onto the internet , its looking for the mail server at the last known DNS resolution ( 192.168.0.4 ) , which it obviously can't see.

connect the laptop from the LAN , then take it off.

do an IP config /flushdns and it "should" connect first time.

Why not configure two separate mail profiles? One for internal use resolving to it's correct DNS name, and one for External use resolving to the NO-Ip address?

What you using for a Mail server? Is your public IP static?

As it stands at the moment, the laptop hasn't been on the LAN, the network card isn't in, so it should even consider it. "ip config /flushdns" not sure what you mean by that, I tried ipconfig /flushdns but it isnt valid.

Our public IP is static. I could configure two profiles, but it isn't for me, it is for a load of users. If possible, I would like to keep it so all they have to do, is make sure the Laptop is connected somewhere, somehow

So just add an Cname record for the server to public DNS?

    Ipconfig /flushdns isn't valid on 98 - its a 2k/Xp command.

Could do that, I suppose, but is it not the same as using no-ip.org?

just tried it with XP home and OE6 via NTL and its fine.
Win98 se with outlook 2000 on NTL is fine too...
tis also fine with 2k pro and Outlook 2000 on ADSL.

So its the fact it is dialup, probably.... *shrugs*
