Could you be referring to 90 million or are you talking about 1stRaven successfully raising the earth's temperature by 0.1 degrees. Anyone noticed how the windy weather at the weekend followed by the recent warmer weather coincides with 1stRavens servers running BIGADV units?

You're about right on the 8800 - probably nearer 5k than 4k, but probably not more than 4k.

The Q6600 I'm not so sure about any more. Looking back over comparitive reviews the Phenom II-based CPUs (like my opteron) are actually pretty good in multithreaded tests, making up a lot of the ground over Core2s better raw intructions per clock (benefit of monolithic quad vs MCM?). So a 2.4Ghz Q6600 might not fare that much better than my 2.5GHz Opteron, which could mean quite a drop off of points when you lose one core to supporting the GPU client.

Hmmm, I'm afraid I'm enough of a geek to want to know how much difference it makes, so I've just restarted my SMP client on 3 cores. I'll let you know what it does to my ppd in about half an hour

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

OK, geekiness satisfied. After artificially limiting my SMP folding to 3 cores (and setting CPU affinity in task manager so it ran 3 cores @ 100% and not 1 @ 100% and the other three at various amounts as threads got core shifted ) my Opteron @ 2.5GHz is getting 3.1Kppd on a 500K WU, as opposed to ~ 4.5K with all 4 cores going. IMNSHO a Q6600 *should* perform a little better at folding than a 2.5GHz Opteron, so I'm going to stick my neck out and say 3.5K on 500K units (although that means you'll drop off to about 2.5K if you pick up a 2M ).

I think he was talking about the 100 million mark...... Got another big adv unit to go through today and a further 2 tomorrow again.

Hmm, I'll get my 1055T running again in a sec. It's just racking up there first 10 units for next to no points and the two WUs I missed putting me off.
Well provided I don't miss any more, I'll still be at >80% return rate once I hit 10 WUs. I'll just download one WU at a time to be on the safe side.

With a 1055T you should have no problem getting the SMP WUs on time, even if you don't run it 24/7.

They're damned good processors those Opteron/X2 processors. After my i7, that was the chip I had the most amount of success with overclocking. Fantastic little workhorses, and you had a decent choice in motherboards. Something that's definitely dropped off since intels Core ranges came out. Seems to have been on the decline over the past few years - mind you, the quality has improved somewhat, (along with the price!)

Aww I've been given a huge 2000000 step, 921pt WU as punishment.
ETA isn't until tomorrow morning, not getting the PPD I was with the 500k WUs.

Stick with it. All points count after all! You see you name "up in lights" in the folder of the month thing?

I reckon with a low score in January, and then almost any score this month you'll be down to possibly scoop 2 of the "most improved" measures! I can hardly contribute any more than I am, but am going to try while the weather's cool enough to be able to.

    Must.... catch.....First.... Raven....

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

Oooh no I didn't notice that.
I'll make it my aim to get 10 WUs out of the way and start gaining bonus points this month - that way, even if I can't fold regularly I can throw a few k points in with ease when they're needed.

Any idea if there's any difference in speed between the Linux and Windows versions? I could just as easily run it on either so if I'd get more PPD folding on Linux...

I find that if I fold with both my 1090T with 6 cores and try to fold on my 5850 the PPD slows right down and I can't finish any smp WUs.

I think I've seen other people say linux is more efficient when folding...

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

From what I've picked up, LINUX was being used because you could run it in a virtual environment, and therefore have multiple instances of it running simultaneously.

From looking into this I got the impression that the newer versions of the clients ran about the same nowadays (i.e. the rate at which your hardware chews through the Work units was now not OS dependent), but that in fact the advantage was now with Windows as the windows drivers are updated more frequently delivering support and optimisations for new hardware, quicker.
