    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

I was under the impression you could force it with fewer than 8 threads.

    http://www.overclock.net/overclock-n...ive-linux.html

Just started running SMP on the 2500K and HFM is showing 1500 ppd :S That seems unbelieveably low, im pretty sure my old X2s were getting 750ppd per core running at 2x2.8ghz, so 4*4400 should be much higher? Any ideas?

I can see all 4 cores running at top speed in CPU-Z and all at 100% load in TaskMgr but that PPD is completely pathetic. Perhaps it's just HFMs reporting, or the type of work unit that it is working on. Possibly because I ran it once without -smp flag and it wants to finish that WU first before starting on the WU's designed for SMP?

Some old friends of mine have just gotten out of the navy, and popped down for a day, considering we started drinking at 10am and I lasted til 1, I think I did pretty well, last I heard though they were off to find more booze and a brothel, whereas I went home and woke up with a skull two sizes too small for my brain and an uneaten kebab at the foot of my bed

Prob not a fantastic idea to fake having 8 cores with a 2500k, with a 2600k you at least have 8 threads with ht, but with only 4 actual cores even that is going to struggle with the deadlines as ht helps but isn't the best thing in the world for folding, it isn't even just an intel thing, the higher clocked phenom x6's can just about manage bigadv, but anything slower is not usable.

    ---

On a somewhat separate note I was reading up about the new bulldozer chips and really think they will be a folding powerhouse, having a 256bit fpu, that can be split into 2x 128bit units should be very fast, as you could run 8 of the 32bit floting point ops that folding uses per clock, not to mention that amd have traditionally been quite good with designing fpu's and they have had the engineers from ati with them for quite a number of years, and all a gpu is effectively just a massive number of powerful fpu's (generalization I know)

Yup, if you ran it without -smp, it'll finish the classic work unit and then download the A3 core to get SMP work units.

On a side note: have you entered the passkey? You won't get bonus without it. Get it here:
    http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/getpasskey.py

And remember, you'll only start getting bonus from your eleventh SMP work unit. And I've checked the PPD database, a 2500K at 4.6GHz gets ~18K PDD for a 481 WU and ~12K PPD for a 921 one (preliminary figures).

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

Yep had my passkey from when I was folding previously. Strange that it downloaded the classic work unit, when I set up the client i thought i ran my initial setup as fah6 -smp -configonly which from memory I thought made subsequent runs automatically run as -smp but I seem to have been mistaken.

Not quite that drastic, 3.3-3.4 will get you inside the deadline, just, but to be safe what you said is recommended.

You need to fool the folding software that there are 8 cores for an X6 to be able to do BIGADV. Folding checks for 8 cores....

The 2600K (can (with all 8 threads overclocks) quite happily manage BIGADV. Mine (2600K) at 4.7Ghz is capable of 45k ppd which is about the same as my i7 970 @ 4.3Ghz, without as much heat.

The 2500K overclocks beautifully, so it may be worth a try. HT is not particularly efficient.... 1 core with 1 real and 1 HT thread is about 1.25 ACTUAL threads in actual raw data processed from what I've seen.

See the attached guide for details...

Right, I'm back from holiday, in work (bleurgh ), and back folding. OK, it won't bump us much, but every little helps, right?

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

Seems to have settled down to about 12500-14500 PPD depending on whether I'm using the computer or its fully idle. Temps staying at sub 50 which I'm pleased with in this weather!

And most importantly I added the folding stats back into my signature!

I've just joined the team. I used to fold for another website, infrequently, but I'll change to the almighty Hexus team, just for the hell of it.

I vaguely recall this feeling, the burgeoning competitiveness, the obsessive checking of the stats, the ever-more-Gollum-like coveting of every precious point... ah, yes, it's all coming back to me now. I think I stopped previously because my computer had a tendency to get to 97% or 98% and then screw up the WU, and I've have to download a new one. And then buy a new keyboard, because apparently, tears of rage do some kind of damage to it.

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

Bleurgh, flipping automatic updates! Dropped out a 1M last night at 58%. I *will* get to 500K points soon, honest

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

Well my Hyper 212+ is installed, idle temps dropped quite a bit but just started folding so will see what happens there.
Had to remove my side intake fan as the 212 is hooooge! turned on a front 120mm intake though so hopefully it won't impact temps much/at all.

If temps look good then I'll clock this thing up a bit & see what PPD I start to get

EDIT: 45C @ 3.6Ghz while folding, not bad
