Bah I got owned by an automatic update too! Was away from home for an exam last night and this morning and came back and very little folding has been done!

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

Hmph, the unit that got interrupted is about to drop for 1200ish. That'll leave me ~ 300 points short of 500k *sigh* If it had gone straight through last night I'd probably have got > 1500 for it and have hit that target already

I'd turn updates off, but given my workstation is also the test / dev server it's probably a good idea to keep it up to date

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

Bah, the dreaded Client-Core Communications Error! This always used to happen to me. I would think it was my overclock, but it's Prime95 stable, so I'm at a loss to explain it. Anyone else overcome this problem? I've done a few Google searches on it but every one of them says bad overclock - now I could understand that on a 4.5GHz i7, but on my puny little overclock? Maybe I'll run memtest for a while, see what happens.

the error code is 0xc0000029, in case anyone's wondering.

Bump your voltage one or two notches higher, when I undervolted my athlon I kept getting those errors despite it being 24hr prime stable, it seems that folding uses a bit more than prime and is sensitive to low volts.

If temps look good then I'll clock this thing up a bit & see what PPD I start to get

Stumbled upon a very cheap 212+ today, sooo wanted to pick it up, but thought it useless since I'm away for the summer, and who knows what we will have in the autumn.

How's the noise with that overclock? What RPMs is it running when folding? That's an important factor for me (already bought 2 resistors for case fans ).

Cheers, Golden Dragoon, I'll give it a go. I've got quite a lot of vdroop on my system, that may be contributing to it.

Well, I've knocked it back down to 3.4 as windows didn't seem very stable, although I've been getting the odd graphical artifact in firefox recently anyway, knocked my GPU clocks down a bit & hoping it goes away. Then I'll try to bump the CPU up again.
While running @3.6 it was pretty quiet, RPM monitor for my mobo said something stupid like 6K but it didn't sound any different from idling (around 1500RPM)

    Now @ 3.4 it's 46C & 1680 RPM.

Got mine for £14.99 from play, been cheaper on scan but under £20 so I'd need to pay P&P

    Thanks for that.

I'm looking for something quieter, since I don't want the RPMs to go over 1500RPM at load, possibly even lower (planning on running my 120mm fan at 800RPM and 92mm fans at around 1200RPM, so need something quieter).

Maybe I'll splash on something more exotic, such as a Noctua C14 or Prolimatech Genesis. We'll see if I end the summer in black

Ah, that's where I really don't want to go - I'd have to change my case at the very least, then it'd not fit under my desk (the current one has ~1 cm of height clearance, can barely put a finger between). And it still is prohibitively expensive, unless we're talking about the likes of Corsair A50-70 and similar (which aren't that good, IMO).

And there's one more thing, that there's nothing available here in Lithuania; I'd have to have it shipped from Germany. Maybe some time when I have money to burn, though

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

I went for water cooling years ago, and once you have it is fairly cheap to keep going with it, even cheaper if you have a waterblock that can be used on multiple sockets so dosn't need to be replaced everytime
    I have:
    Little river G5 block
    1/2" tubing
    XSPC drive bay res
A custom res at the top
    XSPC 120 crossflow rad
    XSPC 240 rad
and a bosch pump out of a wheelchair (have a 18w ddc that I haven't fitted yet)

It has the problem of making you choose a bigger case, but I ran the same loop I run today (sans the 240 rad) in an small antec slk3000b case and it fitted, just
See here for the only picture of it I have:

But wouldn't a WC loop with just 1 120mm rad have similar performance to, say, a Corsair A70?

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

Depends, a proper wc loop will have far more fluid, which even though tubing etc.. is a good insulator will dissipate through them and can "store" more heat, plus if you go for a quality 120 rad, it will have far more surface area than an A70.
My loop has between 1.6-1.9L of fluid in it as my custom res has a 1L capacity and the drive res has a 600ml cap.

As to cases, you can always mod something if you can't find a suitable case you like. I should know

p.s. now I've got Easter holidays and the like out of the way I should be restarting Cunning Plan shortly - I will have water cooling before the summer's out!

Fair points of both of ye, but proper WC is still not an option yet, many factors contributing. Besides, I'm afraid that any modding done to my case will just ruin the appearance (i.e. make it look ugly).
