In a half day event which will include a iively panel discussion as well as views from an independent analyst, we will be sharing with you
different perspectives surrounding this debate. We want to show
you our side of the story, why we beiieve Microsoft’s platform of
technologies is still the safest most cost effective route for many
organisations and where we see the future.
At the event you wiil also be able to listen to and question a number of IT decision makers who have already been through the process of looking at Linux and Open Source as a platform for delivering IT
    business soiutions.
This will be a unique opportunity to question the business and
technical experts at Microsoft about some of the issues you’re
currentiy facing and some of the decisions you’ll need to make.
    MICROSOFT V OPEN SOURCE -
    THE SEMINAR BENEFITS:
    • Understand the open source issues
    • Consider the platform issues — pros and cons
    • Question the Platform and Linux technical experts
    • Unique opportunity

    LMAO this is funny.

Anyone who runs Microsoft Windows servers that doesn't have an explicit need to run MS servers (i.e. they are not running Exchange Server or anything .NET) needs to be fired for incompetence IMHO.

    I like this bit:

    Understand the open source "issues"

Yeah, they would be an issue to MS; Windows Server is getting killed by Linux atm...

No doubt they will come out with their usual "total cost of ownership" rubbish. Be interesting to go to, anyway. Are you an MS developer nichomach?

I'm guessing your on the MSDN?

Anyway, do you remember the pdf produced about why MSOffice was better than Open Office. The only problem was with the "features" in MSO that aren't in OO.org: no bugger uses them!

Anyway, should be interesting for you, if nothing else.

Yes, I get MSDN Universal (more for the complete set of platforms and server apps than anything else). I like OpenOffice, but if I were pitching to replace MS Office I'd probably look at the fully-fledged StarOffice suite...

BTW, I have NO interest in attending an MS propaganda fest...ye gods, the "panel" are 2 MS marketroids and an "analyst" from Meta Group. So completely open and unbiased, then...

We do run MS servers here, since we're on Exchange, and the machines also run a couple of MSDE driven applications - so shoot me! Actually, they do a pretty good job, but they do cost money every time we add another user. I'm keeping an eye on Kolab and Ximian as alternatives, especially since Novell have helpfully GPL'ed their Ximian > Exchange connector...

Yeah, I saw the connector news on Slashdot. Very interesting. A shame reverse engineering an exchange server is so damn hard. I think that's the last application that MS are holding on to now, and the thing that is causing most companies to stick with MS. Without that, they are sunk on the corporate server. W2K was a huge leap forward in terms of stability and overall quality, but not having a command line is just too annoying for me. I hear VERY good things about the shell they are devising for Longhorn, but that's a long way off.

    Yeah, Longhorn...tomorrow...sometime...never...

2K's worked well for me, and on the desktop XP Pro's very nice (wish they'd stop trying to hide all the unnecessary crap from the uninstaller, though...). When you say "lack of a command line", what bits do you mean? The Resource Kit's got just about everything in it, but of course you do pay quite a bit for it...
