Some general advice:
1. Get some anti-virus software, eg AVG from www.grisoft.com, which is free. (keep it up to date as well!)
2. Keep your computer up to date: windowsupdate
3. Enable a firewall on your PC, eg ZoneAlarm (from here) which is Free, Sygate (from here) etc.
4. Disable the preview pane in outlook and outlook express. (howto: here )
If you think you have one of the following viruses, or you want to prevent infection:
MSBlast, W32.Blaster.Worm, Lovsan etc. - This effects Windows 2000, NT, 2003, XP but NOT 95,98,ME
If you have the MSBlast worm or are being affected by it, for example, your PC (windows XP) is shutting down everytime you connect to the internet, then you need the patch from Microsoft, and you should check you don't have the worm with the fix from symantec.
If you have Windows 2000 and you get svchost.exe has generated errors, or you are unable to copy and paste etc, you too could be being affected by the worm. Get the patch from microsoft and get the fix to check you don't have the worm.
