    Typical...

    Building your own computer has the predictable drawback of people thinking you know how to use computers. I have been asked for a software recommendation today, can anyone make sense of this/recommend me a piece of software to recommend?

    I can just about deal with paying £85 for Microsoft Office, but I draw the line at paying an extra £100 for the version that includes Outlook.

    Not looking for a recommendation, just thoughts about where on the web to look for reviews of simple PIM software. All I need is something to look after:

    addresses
    calendar
    and (ideally) tasks

    and to be synch-able with Blackberry

    Re: Typical...

    I'm not going to lie i couldn't get it too work, but it seems to be used by quite a few as a decent alternative.

    No doubt someone more in the know will point you on the right path

    Re: Typical...

    The sticking point is likely to be the Blackberry sync (depending on what you want it to sync)

    From here

    Desktop email programs

    For enterprise integration with BlackBerry® Enterprise Server, one of the following email program requirements must be met:

    * Microsoft® Outlook® 2000, 2003, 2007 or 2010 (only 32-bit mode is supported) (corporate or workgroup installation) with an email account on a Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5 Service Pack 4 or later that can receive messages from the Internet
    * IBM® Lotus Notes® 5.0.6 or later with an email account on an IBM® Lotus® Domino® Server version 5.03 or later (5.0.12 or later recommended) that can receive messages from the Internet

    Organizers

    The following organizers are supported for use with Intellisync:

    * IBM Lotus Notes 6, 6.5, 7, 8, 8.5
    * Microsoft Outlook 2002, 2003, 2007, 2010 (only 32bit mode is supported)
    * Microsoft Outlook Express 6, Microsoft Windows Contacts (Vista Address Book) and Calendar (Vista Calendar)
    * Novell GroupWise 6.5, 7
    * Yahoo!®
    does that help? Also don't forget that tech help comes with a consultancy fee, or you'll be doing it for free forever

    Due to my own ignorance, not a great deal. Basically, he has to get outlook if he wants to sync.

    Outlook, Notes (*shudder*), Outlook Express (not sure if they'd count Windows Mail under this banner), Groupwise or Yahoo!

    A lad at Uni gets his Uni emails sent to his BB - Uni uses the @Live system.

    The top section is for enterprise use: I'm guessing he doesn't have a BES server kicking around if he's struggling to justify the cost of Outlook

    Re: Typical...

    in that case.... he could use pretty much anything he likes, assuming that he's using his mail client in IMAP rather than POP mode. There's an AOL app for Blackberry, and he could happily use Thunderbird or anything else to display mail on his PC.

    You need to find out what he's wanting to sync - if it's just mail, calendar and contacts then he doesn't need a desktop application to do this, if it's something else then we need to know just what he *is* wanting to do.

    http://mobile.aol.com/product/blackberry/mail/ btw

    If he wants to be able to display his mail and contacts on his PC he can use Thunderbird, tied up with Windows Calendar (if using Vista or Win7 - if XP then we need to rethink). These *won't* sync through the Blackberry Desktop sync manager, but because he'd be running in IMAP mode and not POP it won't matter as all the data is stored on the mailserver and all these apps (and the Blackberry app) are doing is displaying the data on the server.
