    Amazing Boot/Shutdown times

Amazing Boot + Shutdown times + Overall System Performance

I just tinkered with my OS for a long time, insuring proper driver installations and a few registry tweaks...

I went from 90 second shutdown screens to 17 seconds...

I went from over 70 seconds to login to under 20!

When I press "Restart" it takes under 45 seconds before I'm back in windows, as soon as windows pops up (under 20 seconds from bios screen) then I click XMPlay and my music starts instantly where I left it off, I click Firefox and I'm posting this message within the time it takes for me to click "Login"

    This is with SATA HDD's...

    Amazing

How I achieved this on my computer and my friend's and families' computers as well (via remote access)

Make sure you backup before doing any of the changes, I nor my friends have had any problems but I cannot be held responsible in any case.

(This is on Vista 64-bit running ZoneAlarm Security Suite, AVG Anti Virus, and SUPERAntiSpyware, as well as all default Services)
Assuming you have correct drivers, etc:

Step 1 - set HDD's from IDE to AHCI (may have improved boot times, I haven't troubleshot each individual step but I know that combined this is how I achieved major improvements for myself and friends)
    Step 2 - [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]

    DisablePagingExecutive value from 0 to 1 - http://kadaitcha.cx/vista/ad_hoc/faq/performance.html
    Step 3 - [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]

LargeSystemCache value from 0 to 1.
    Step 4 - [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\PriorityControl]

Change the value of Win32PrioritySeparation to 26 hexadecimal, which is 38 decimal, save the changes and reboot.
Step 5 - Disable "clear page file on shutdown" locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ CurrentControlSet\ Control\ Session Manager\ Memory Management
Modify (if not present, rt click in open space and create) the Value Data Type/s and Value Name/s :
    Data Type: REG_DWORD [Dword Value]
    Value Name: ClearPageFileAtShutdown
    Set to 0
Step 6 - enable ReadyBoost (I used a 16gb memory stick plugged in back of PC) using 4gb for ReadyBoost
Step 7 - HDD's set to "Enable write caching on the disk" + "Enable advanced performance" (Note this may cause loss of Data if you lose power to HDD's, or so it warns, I've got an external backup though)
Step 8 - PageFile disabled on Primary HDD (containing OS); PageFile dedicated to Secondary HDD @ 12000-12000
    Step 9 - Change "WaitToKillAppTimeout" to 5000
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

or (for Vista, as I read that Vista changed the key from 'AppTimeout' to 'ServiceTimeout')

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
    Change "WaitToKillServiceTimeout" to 5000

Step 10 - Depending on your Motherboard, and what options are available in your BIOS, ensure that Fast Boot is enabled, and if you have, for example, firewire + sata drives in your front panel, disconnect those from the motherboard if you aren't using them and disable them in BIOS from your computer searching the devices.

    Final Notes:

    I'm running 4gb RAM @ 533MHz (1066) 5-5-5-15 timings; Please see my system spec's for more details...

I hope this can help anyone, feel free to comment if you know that something is unhelpful, I'm here to learn, not to teach. I'm only stating what has worked for me and my friends.

If anyone adds more useful/updated information, then I'll be sure to update this original post.

    Best wishes

Excellent point, I will fix the original post and explain in detail how I achieved this.

Right now though I'm helping a friend achieve this and it has been successful, now we're talking on MSN voice... I'm too lazy to type everything at the moment but I will update this thread as soon as possible. Stay tuned.

Getting rid of driver and other errors is the main thing - if windows has problems with a device or phantom device it can take a while for it to give up and move on. All computers I've had have had similar shutdown/start up speeds to the improved figures, almost regardless of hardware spec and OS, and without any need for tinkering.

TBH sounds about right for an optimised system, once you have got rid of the startup entries and set a few services to manual.

    - in fact the shutdown time seems a little slow

    People still boot?

Sleep/resume, and outside of that go for a pee or make a drink

    Re: Amazing Boot/Shutdown times

    ^^ that.

I only shut down and reboot if I'm having a problem with my system or I'm going away for more than an over night stay. Yes I know it's using electricity, and yes I know I should turn everything off at night, but the convenience of hitting a key on the keyboard and everything being ready as soon as my monitors give a picture (that takes a couple of seconds longer than W7 resuming from sleep) it worth it.

Perhaps I missed something, but can't understand why Apple were getting such praise for their "instant on" stuff, my netbook does that too. Perhaps a Macbook Air is ready even before the screen is fully ope, but who cares? You can't use a laptop with a half closed screen so how does half a second really matter?

My main rig uses the same amount of power regardless - it's never really 'off' when you shutdown as the motherboard and USB ports are all still powered.

    Re: Amazing Boot/Shutdown times

How are you measuring your times?

I use(d) this on my laptop to get the cold boot times down from around the 120 second mark to just short of 45 seconds.

    I just counted myself

Does that program show time to boot?

I don't know if I want to install it, maybe I'll give it a try and see....

    Re: Amazing Boot/Shutdown times

It shows you programs you can remove/delay from your boot process.

First boot with it installed will show you your boot time to a working desktop. It then shows how long each program takes (program A + B + C + ... = boot time) and whether you can remove it from the boot or delay it until a later time.

Give it a shot, it's easily uninstalled

    Re: Amazing Boot/Shutdown times

Unless it's installing updates, my HTPC only takes about 20 - 30 seconds to boot to a usable desktop, from memory. My desktops always get shut down when I'm done with them, but then I rarely use them nowadays: I think my main gaming rig gets turned on less often than once a week (although this might change if I ever get round to tidying up the study!). My work laptop gets hibernated every night and brings up the login prompt in about 5 seconds on resume - it gets turned off properly about every couple of weeks to allow for updates and stuff. My home laptop and TC1100 live on standby and resume in a second or two - it takes me longer than that to log back in once they're running. Again I'll shut them down properly once every couple of weeks or so to try to make sure they get proper updates. Frankly my phone probably spend more time actually turned off than my computers, but that's largely because I keep forgetting to charge the battery
