Smile [TIP] Opera: how to make the right click "search with" open on a new TAB

No idea if anyone else wants this but for a while it's bugged me that in Opera if I:

    - Highlight some text
    - Right click
    - Choose Search with *blah*

..it then opens on the same tab. This isn't what I want. Fortunately Opera is very configurable and you can fairly easily change this functionality:

    1. Open settings->prefs->advanced->toolbars
    2. Highlight "Opera Standard" under Menus.
    3. Click Duplicate.
    4. Make sure the "copy of standard default" is highlighted (otherwise it'll not use the new file).
    5. Press OK.

This has now copied the standard menu configuration file into your profile folder - this is usually somewhere like:

    C:\Users\Tim\AppData\Roaming\Opera\Opera 11.00 alpha\menu

You'll find a file (with today's date and time) called "standard_menu (1).ini" if you're in the right place.

Open this file - use notepad or something equivalent. Now search for the following block of code:

    Code:
    [Hotclick Popup Menu]
Item, MI_IDM_SELSEARCH="Hotclick search, 200,,, "Search Web""
    Submenu, MI_IDM_SEARCH_DUMMY_PARENT, Internal Search With
    After the last line add:

    Code:
Item, Google Search in New Tab=Copy & New page & Go to page, "http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=%c"
This will add a new menu item called "Google Search in New Tab". When you click this the search will run on a new tab and Opera will switch to it. If you'd like it to leave the new tab in the background then use this line instead:

    Code:
Item, Google Search in New Tab=Copy & New page & Go to page, "http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=%c" & Minimize page
And that's it - save the file and restart opera. Select some text and right click and if you've done it right you've got a new funky menu option

    Thanks Dangel!

It's a shame you have to go editing .ini files, but it's still cool

I just use the Shift key. I'd like to use your method, but my Search in Opera is highly modded and I daren't try anything for fear of getting Google back again.

Re: [TIP] Opera: how to make the right click "search with" open on a new TAB

    How about:
    Menu->Preferance->Advanced->Tabs-> reuse current tab [dissable]?

Already thought of that, problem is that's global for all tabs rather than just for when doing this particular thing. That's actually even more annoying

Maybe for you, just thought I would put it in there, as its exactly how I like to browse ATM, might all change when I update to opera 11, but going to wait until its out of the beta. Just thought I would throw it in there if it is what someone wanted, as it would save them a lot of time

No, it's valid - but not for me (even on Opera 11 which I'm using now). It's more a sledgehammer approach in that respect and hence it lacks usefulness (pour moi). I prefer the granularity of sorting out the one problem rather than changing my browsing experience as a whole.

Thank-you so much for posting this. This was one thing I missed from Firefox (with Googlebar Lite), and turning off the reuse tab option drove me nuts.

    Ooh knowledgeable opera users!
    Permission to hijack?
Anyone know how to make clicking the opera symbol on the windows start menu shortcut make it launch a new window instead of just opening a new tab in existing ones?

Just make a shortcut with command line arguments - here's a list:

Re: [TIP] Opera: how to make the right click "search with" open on a new TAB

this is great tutorial, Ive been searching this all the time ..
Just want to correct a tiny tiny thing here.
the 2nd line for the background tab should be :
Item, Google Search in New Background Tab=Copy & New page & Go to page,....

If not, it will only show search ( not in background ) while doing it in background. like mine did

    cheers

I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if you knew how to do this in Opera 12? I tried your instructions, but they don't seem to work for this version.

    Much appreciated!
