    What GPU for folding?

I want to replace my 9800GTX soon as It is a bit noisy and hot (nothing owrrying just that I have the upgrade bug) and not particularly efficient power wise. Now a GTX460 768mb would get me doubple the ppd with maybe 10W less power draw, or there's the GTS450 which uses like 65W less power and can still hit 9-10k ppd? What should I do?
Also for a CPU, I'll be looking to drop in a hexcore to my current mobo as it's less hassle than changing platform, should a 1055T give roughly doubple ppd compared to a Athlon II x3 445? It has double the cores and way more cache, although I'm not sure how much of a bearing cache has on folding performance. I could also OC a 1055T (I would get the 95W edition btw) to about 3.2GHz no sweat, I have a good cooler.

I just feel that if I'm folding all day I want more than 3.5k points!

You might want to take it to the hardware forum, but anyhoo: I'd say definitely either a GTX460 or a 450, if the budget's tight - both will outperform your CPU easily.

    Re: What GPU for folding?

If the GTS450 only gets 1.5k less ppd and uses 65W less then it's a deal. Only thing is that I could have a GTX460 for only £20 more :/

my 460 get's me around 11k ppd at stock when 24-7. i'd say if it's only 20 quid more go for the 460 as it's awesome for gaming too

    Re: What GPU for folding?

the last G80 generation processors are fabulous value for money when it comes to folding.

I've recorded the following scores over time (approximated)

GTX 8800 does 7k ppd on XP
GTX 285 does 9k ppd on XP
GTX295 does 12k ppd on Win 7 (while folding on CPU simulataneously)
GTX 480 does 10k ppd on Win 7 (while folding on CPU simulataneously)

If budget is a constraint, then I'd seriously consider looking around at one of this generation of hardware because, and maybe adding a second card rather than binning and starting again.

This becomes a moot point if you want to get a DX11 card for gaming also. Most of the game I play are DX10, for which my GTX 295 would have been sufficient had I not recently sold my soul to the credit card devil and upgraded to the 480's.

    Re: What GPU for folding?

It's more the power draw, I want to get more points per watt. I think that the GTS450 looks good. Also, I can't add another card anyway.

unleash that 480!! should do way more than 10k, my 460 does 11... stop folding on CPU or leave a core free for gpu will probably give you higher overall ppd
