Just ordered something to spice up my life

    A GTX 460
Got the asus top 768mb one off scan for £112, seems a bargain for what it is, as I was playing about with a friends one this weekend and with a very mild voltage tweak, it hit 1850mhz on the shaders and 890mhz on the core, good news is he said we can swap if mine doesn't overclock too well, as he has no interest in doing anything like that.
Looking online I see that ones with circa 1800/850mhz put out 10-11k ppd I think it is a worthy upgrade from my 4850+GT240 combo as it alone will more than double what they put out together (plus with the 460&240 together I won't have to bother with driver hacks) so I am estimating my total ppd will break down something like this:

CPU: 3k (currently running smp3 due to the ati client needing cpu time)
    460: 10k
    240: 3k
    PS3: sometimes
plus a few other systems I have tinkered with that run single core clients and occasionally turn in work units.

Nice one, I'll be getting one too. Let me know how the cooler is on that one.

Re: Just ordered something to spice up my life

I can already tell you about the cooler, despite having a "directCU" cooler, it keeps the gpu about 65-80ish at full load not over clocked depending on what it is running (that may be very good for nVidia, have run ATi cards for years and they are pretty cool running), and runs at a lowish fan speed doing that so but isn't what I would call very quiet but it is something I am going to replace anyway.
A big minus point is it dumps all the warm air into the case, as it isn't a blower type heatsink

    65-80 :/

My MSI Cyclone hasn't gone past 50c when folding...
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Re: Just ordered something to spice up my life

80 was recorded in a closed case with what I consider fairly standard ventilation, and running furmark, don't forget it hasn't got a blower so all the waste heat ends up in your case

At default clocks (including putting the GT240 back to stock due to un-installing all the drivers) I am getting these ppd:

    CPU: 3700
    460: 10100
    240: 3700

Not entirely sure why my cpu has shot up by 500-700ppd, but I assume it is simply not having to deal with the ATi client, as I still haven't changed it from using 3 cores so didn't think there would be much difference, as for the gt240, it is running much better with another nVidia card, as it used to get about 2500-3000ppd, seems running the cuda\physx hack was slowing it down.

Can you explain what you mean by "the physics hack"?

You're getting more out of your GTX 460 than I am out of my GTX 480 at the moment. Any tips?

Yeah I really don't understand that tatty, what exactly is in the machine it's running in? I assume it's not in sli or anything?

Re: Just ordered something to spice up my life

It's in SLI, but hasn't made any difference. I didn't have the SLI bridge in - in the beginning, and when I put it in, I read that the latest version of the drivers didn;t need you to enable and disable the sli settign in the control panel.

I've got SLI on and Physix on. My PPD dropped off by 2000+ points when the OPENMM units started coming through, and I've had nothing but them since. Is anyone specifying any switches in their clients?

The machines running fine - my 3d marks vantage scores are showing everything running to spec.

I think it's the types of work units that coming though presently, but if it can be rectified by using - advmethods or something, then I'll gladly make the change.

Re: Just ordered something to spice up my life

im tempted to a GTX 460 to replace my aging 4870 card.

Always had a Radeon card , but i tend to play WoW these days , hence im gonna try a Nvidia Card this time around.

What would i need to look for ? What brands are good ?

If they're a reference design, then they come out of the same factory, but are just rebranded, so the brand should make absolutely no difference to the underlying hardware. However, I would say to look for a cooler that suits your kit. If you have a high airflow/well ventilated case then the MSI one comes well recommended (I think Terbinators got one), otherwise I'd look to get one that exhausts the air to the rear of the case.

Personally I've gone for eVGA branded kit, but that's because I watercool, and eVGA honour warranty's even if you replace the stock cooling, as long as in doing so you didn't damage the card.

I got a Silverstone FT02-WRI Case , i prefer something that exhaust the heat out of the back like u said , my current 4870 does that well. Also i prefer something that is quiet as well.

I was looking at the Evga one as well and the Asus one.

nVidia have been a bit of a c@#* with people and disabled cuda and physx in their drivers if they detect an ATi graphics driver loaded on the system, so in order to run a radeon alongside the geforce you need to hack the nvidia drivers by inserting a few files and changes, now for my gt 240 to have suddenly shot up in ppd, and to stay like that I am assuming the hacked files were slowing it down a little.

Tatty, you should try running the first card with the "-forcegpu nvidia_fermi" switch only, and the second with that and "-gpu 1" I have found having the first cards with the "-gpu 0" switch hurt the performance of the two cards I was running previously, and am not sure why.

Anyway an update on my current clocks are that I have gotten the gt 240 up to the 619\1508 mark, which I know from previously is it's max usable overclock it will got 100mhz faster on the shaders but with a slower core and I have known that for a while, but that doesn't get as much performance as this setting with the core shader sliders unlinked.

The big news is that the gtx460 is running at 900/1800 at standard volts, and running a nice cool 58-62 whilst folding (63-66 in furmark) at 50% fan speed, all I did was replace the goop they use with a proper application of thermal compound, as the temps were 1-3c higher out of the box at those speeds, at 50 rather than 70% of my friends one for a similar overclock the fan is much better, and the lower temps are most likely to do with the airflow in my system, as I said his is pretty standard.

0.96v can adjust it up to 1.1v through the asus or afterburner software.
default and unchangeable voltage on the 240 is 1v.
