The cheaper SKU probably will net them a similar profit as the parts would cost less. For instance if it was dropped down to a ULV Pentium,a 32GB SSD and a smaller battery they could sell it at £550 to £600 and it would do well. At that price their would be no similar competition at all.
TBH,even a lot of these new UltraBooks are also priced above £700 too.
Like I said it is probably the iPad which Apple does not want it to compete with.
Still, I have heard noise that Ivy Bridge could lead to cheaper UltraBooks as Asus said that would start at around $600!
This is why next year will be very interesting for people wanting an ultraportable.
Re: Why do people buy Apple / OSX?
Perhaps, I just feel they have no need to right now, No one else does anything comparable for less money :)
Just to wind people up a bit, my perfect config would be the 11" air running Windows 7 whilst maintaining the same battery life OSX nets.

I think the 'anti-apple' posters in this thread are quite capable of winding themselves up! :)
Re: Why do people buy Apple / OSX?
well... i have been wound up by my ****ty apple laptop which brought to light the reality of the ****ty apple following and its attitude.
But whatever, advertising is clearly more real than the real life experiences :p
Re: Why do people buy Apple / OSX?
I just bought a Mac. In a nutshell, It's works. However windows has problems from time to time. And I'm a final year Computer and Information Security student, so I'm somewhat competent when it comes computing.
Everything is nice, UI, speed, efficiency.
Shove in a SSD and it's even better!

Not sure if this will help you, but this is what I used in order to turn off mouse acceleration in OSX:
In your terminal:
defaults write .GlobalPreferences com.apple.mouse.scaling -1
defaults write .GlobalPreferences com.apple.trackpad.scaling -1
(obviously the 2nd line turns off trackpad acceleration).
I've used 5 different mice with my MBP for photoediting - 2 bluetooth (1x Dell, 1x Razor) and 2 wired (1x Dell, 1x MS gaming mouse) and one non-BT wireless (logitech M505). Strangely the problem only problem I've had was with the logitech one, and that only occured in Win7 when running games, it would sometimes jump around - I've never run games in OSX so the same problem might exist there as well. There seemed to be some interference with it (i guess when the gfx card was running 3D?!), but seemed to be solved by running a USB extension cable for the wireless dongle closer to the mouse, kind of defeating the purpose!
Hope that helps.
Re: Why do people buy Apple / OSX?
The easiest way to explain is they just work, out the box, which for majority of people is enough reason to pay the extra costs.
Re: Why do people buy Apple / OSX?
Why do people buy Apple?
Mostly it's been said, quality, work out of the box, Marketing, Conning and many other emotive words, which may or may not be true.
For what it's worth, here are mine.
I have two up and running on my home network and I bought them because I like them! I'm not trying to broadcast superiority to my colleagues as has been hinted at in this post because I also have two very high spec Home Build Wintel machines on the same network. I use the Macs for Text-Work, and the Wintel machines for Drawing and Play.
YES! I do agree with the gripes about the price, and that is why I draw on Serif's lovely and FAIRLY PRICED DrawPlus software; and website-create on their equally lovely, and equally fairly priced, WebPlus software on my Wintel machines, rather than the costly Photoshop and Dreamweaver which I would need to provide the same level of user-joy experience on my Macs.
The one area where I let my heart rule my purse was in Speech Recognition. Macspeech Dictate for Mac is WELL OVER TWICE THE PRICE of Dragon Dictate for Wintel, but it has a better Speech Recognition Engine for my Geordie accent. However, I didn't have to LIKE paying the premium, and {Please take notice Nuance Communications, Inc.} I DID NOTICE, and I DIDN'T LIKE IT!
Petra.

People buying a MAC because they can period.
Re: Why do people buy Apple / OSX?
hmmm now how did that saying go......"an apple a day..........
Re: Why do people buy Apple / OSX?
Quite an old thread, but thought I'd post some opinions.
Personally, I own an iPhone 4 (had it for a year now) as I'd rather just have something that is closed, but proven to work for the general consumer. For a phone, I don't ask for THAT much. Sure, perhaps Android may have more features, but I love how simple iOS is. I've used 3 Android phones (Acer Liquid Metal, Motorola Defy and Orange SFII) and while they can't be directly compared due to different pricings, I feel that Android phones require more setup to get the most out of them. Sure, you can easily google it and follow a guide, but I was born in the age of OSes with GUIs. I don't want to have to flaff around cmd or writing codes or something (not sure what it is) as I don't really have the technical knowledge for it and aren't prepared to learn it.
I've always seen myself as a "hardware" guy rather than a "software" guy. As in, you can ask me to build a computer, maybe study engineering or something. But programming or software/OS help? Leave me out!
I've also been considering getting a Mac Mini as it is very competitively priced and it's a niche product. I've been waiting a while for half decent nettops but they all seem to be overpriced. It's funny how they're more expensive than a Mac Mini. You can tell I'm a very basic user, I only do light photo/graphics editing, web browse a lot and have average multimedia uses (I don't have to watch only 1080p for example - DVD quality is fine for me). I rarely play intensive games either (FPS, TPS games are all not my thing - jRPGs are and they tend to come out on consoles). The only other options are stuff from Zotac and AsRock. I like the AsRock stuff, but they're too expensive here in the UK. Zotac are ok, but again, they're more expensive than Apple once again.
If only there was a PC around 20cmx20cmx5cm (2L) that had two USB ports on the front and the power button only (I have no need for a ODD or audio input/outputs) and SD card (for photos) with whatever on the back but at least either dual link DVI or DisplayPort along with space inside for 2x 2.5" HDD/SSDs and either a desktop i3 Sandybridge chip or laptop i5 sandybridge chip (I think they're pretty close in terms of performance) along with graphics performance of a 6570 is fine. The price should be around £500 and I'd buy it.
I guess I just like the idea of power in a small form factor. E.g. I use an ultrabook and it's perfectly adequate for my needs. (1366x768 is really fine in terms of resolution; an SSD makes it super responsive; ULV i5 is enough for most things I throw at it; HD3000 is enough for 1080p and even for League of Legends, which is the only PC game I play).

The esthetics. Both hardware and software. There is level of taste and quality. It's the same reason people buy a Mercedes.

Agreed, it the small details that count. One example of this is font rendering in OSX which I feel looks a lot better than in Windows.
Re: Why do people buy Apple / OSX?
OK, late to the party here.
I have a 2010 macbook pro.
We actually bought it for my dad. His laptop failed, and my brothers and I (I built my own PCs, they're both Mac owners) decided that as Dad doesn't have a good amount of computer know how, the ease of a Mac would be good for him.
He hated it.
So I bought him a Dell, which he loves, and I got the macbook pro.
I love it.
I still have my desktop PC, and my HTPC, and I've put Windows 7 on the MBP as a dual boot (did have triple boot with LInux as well, but it didn't work out so well), but for ease of internet browsing, email, and office work (word only, I use visual basic macros in Excel, so would only dream of doing that on a PC), I usually run to the mac. Gaming, obv, is on the main PC.
So why do I like it? It starts up nice and quickly, it doesn't nag me with prompts very often, if at all, it doesn't crash, and it's very polished in general presentation. I was disappointed with the Lion upgrade over Snow Leopard: I felt there was a real performance hit. But for general, run of the mill computer stuff, I find it an effortless and efficient tool.
Re: Why do people buy Apple / OSX?
I have had 2 iphones, a 3gs and what I have now a 4S, I have also had about 4 or 5 android phones. As many have said the quality of the Apple product and the fact it just works is what impressed me with them, in the end I came back to Apple after going through several android phones. Android is ok, but just feels thrown together.
