    Windows Performance Index

My Hard drive scores 5.9 which lowers my scores from 7.7

Any advice on how to boost the performance of the HDD?

    Re: Windows Performance Index

Firstly, dont worry too much about W.P.E., it's not a great benchmark.
In my view, the HDD is the biggest bottleneck of nearly any system, but the W.P.E. will typically rate a hard drive's score far higher than graphics or CPU scores (see my recent experiences).

Do you actually want your drive to perform better, or would you simply be happier with a higher score?

You could swap your hard drive for a better one - either an SSD, or a fast regular drive like a Western Dig Black.
The other option is (i believe) to disable power saving options, but i do not advise this.

5.9 is good performance for a regular HDD. No need (or way) to boost it. You could increase your RAM which would allow windows to cache more in advance, speeding up loads, you could use a USB stick and enable ready boost which is almost the same thing, or you could buy an SSD and use that instead.

Or you could try not to chase numbers for the sake of it?

My WPE score has been 5.9 for as long as I remember but that's about as good as you get with HDDs.

So if that is as good as HDDs get why didn't microsoft put it as the max score instead of mediocre?

And I am not chasing for 'the sake of it' I want my system to perform well, and the HDD is what seems to be lagging.

As I said, it's not a great benchmark. For one thing, it just gives an arbitrary number which has no actual measurements. You are better off using nearly anything else (one example being SiSoft sandra), which will actually tell you what sorts of measurements in terms of Megabytes per second you are getting.

Have a browse around StorageReview, although the long and short in that SSD's are dramatically better than HDD's for speed.
Do you have a 2.5" or 3.5" drive currently?

    Re: Windows Performance Index

They put it as a max score to allow for improvements in technology. Everything used to be limited to 5.9 but with Win7 they rescaled the scores to allow higher. As mentioned, SSDs will be faster. I must admit that I really don't find my disks causing delays, or if they do then it is so small I wouldn't spend about £1800 to replace the 2 x 500Gb HDDs I have with SSDs of the same size.

Your HDD may be "lagging" from the score point of view but is it really holding back your PC that much?

Numbers are relative, not out of any score (only at the limit of the test). As performance goes up over the years the score can go up too. If you want a faster storage system then you can RAID or use an SSD, which are faster than a single HDD, but for a single HDD 5.9 is fine.

    SSD (my system):

    In what way?

    Re: Windows Performance Index

    Its 3.5" Samsung spinpoint f3 1tb

I am getting lag on WOW when I turn, its at over 100fps when going straight or standing still but as soon as i turn it bounces down to about 5fps then back up to 100fps over and over untill i stop....could this be the HDD not being able to read it quick enough?

    Definitely not.
The Sammy F3's are good (I know, i just bought one) and wouldnt lead to nearly anything like that.

Any ideas what it could be? My GPU is overclocked to:

    VCore: 1.15
    Engine: 790
    Memory: 4000

CPU Is standard untill I can grab an aftermarket cooler as is RAM

    Re: Windows Performance Index

Well it's partitally guesswork at this stage, however the graphics card is most likely.
You say that your card is overclocked - if (for whatever reason) it gets too hot, it may be scaling itself back a bit, or perhaps a small part of itself stops working....
First thing to try is set everything to stock settings and let us know.
Also, are you up-to-date with graphics card drivers? I've also seen situations where people update their drivers (quite reasonably) however have to return back to the drivers that came with the machine (unlikely, but possible).
(By the way, you haven't said what your graphics card is).

The second most likely culprit would be the CPU, and the same issues (ie some type of throttling).

Edit: I can now see that you also have this thread running for the same issue:

Yup, i thought a new thread may be more appropriate.

Asus HD6850 OC Edition, I think all drivers are up to date...8.782.0.0 I think they are. The hottest it has got is 50 degrees

I will set it to stock and see what happens.

CPU Is 1055t x6 with all 6 cores unlocked but not overclocked at all
