    Encrypted LVM Installation Time

    I'm installing Debian 5.07 with an encrypted LVM, and I'm at the following screen:

    Partition disks

    [### Erasing data on IDE slave, partition #2 (hdb2) ]

    The hashes indicating the progress of this operation after about an hour. Is it supposed to take this long? I guess it could be zeroing the disk to prevent attacks on the encryption, but I'm surprised it's taking this long.

    Thanks

    It's a bit hard to say given that you haven't stated the size of the partition but, yes, it will generally take a long time.

    Also, it's not just zero-filling the partition, it's filling it with random data (otherwise the subsequent presence of encrypted files would be obvious to anyone who knew what they were looking for).

    Yes, it can take a frustratingly long time. It may very well try to scrub your swap partition towards the end as well.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Was a clean install on a new 160GB drive. Had finished by this morning. Thanks both.
