probably not unless anything doesn't work ie. network etc.
usually not. what barebones is it.
Nope, the system driver disc is 100% useless. Unless there's some system feature which isn't working, then you don't need to give it any further thought. So if you have a system with Intel integrated graphics, then 3D will likely work out of the box, if it's nVidia ION, then jockey will offer to install the nVidia proprietary drivers for you.
thanks guys

Ubuntu (and most of the modern distros) have pretty good hardware support straight off the install. And as others have said, the drivers supplied will be to get additional features out of the hardware.
The usual areas where you might need additional drivers are to get the best out of Nvidia or ATI graphics cards. I see you have an Intel graphics chip, which Ubuntu should support anyway, although you might want to do a Google search to see if there are any Intel drivers for Linux for it.

Anyone else notice whats wrong with this PC ? DDR3 on LGA 775 ? Surely this should be DDR2 unless some very late LGA 775 boards supported DDR3 ?
Most new LGA 775 chipsets support DDR3, it's just optional to put the slots on the motherboard. My previous P35 motherboard had slots for both DDR2 and DDR3.
Oh well I've just learnt something new today.
thank you all for the advice
I've personally never seen a driver disc that came with anything other than MS Windows programs, drivers and "useful extras" (ie bloatware). I am only referring to the consumer products here, enterprise could well be different.
But i also concur, you're probably best off not amending anything much from the default install, at least until you become more familiar with using Ubuntu.
There is however one section, under 'Admin' i think IIRC, with an icon that looks like a PCB / graphics card, and is called Hardware (or something very similar).
Basically Ubuntu, being a Linux-based OS, is 'open source' as I'm sure you know, and that most of these OSes (to a greater or lesser degree) try to bundle non-proprietary drivers as standard. For graphics, this would typically mean not installing the AMD or Nvidia-made drivers, but open source ones that are usually created by the community. The proprietary drivers however (for graphics, chipsets, RAID cards, just about anything in principle) can often be better however, so as long as you dont object philosophically, then it is in this 'hardware' section above that you can easily install all extra relevant drivers.
