    Debian 6 released, FreeBSD variant previewed

    Interesting bit of news here. The latest stable release of Debian - Squeeze - has been released.

    With it comes the option to run an x86 or x64 FreeBSD kernel, instead of the GNU Linux kernel.

    I like FreeBSD, but I do prefer the Debian (well, Ubuntu) userland and filesystem layout, so this is quite an interesting marriage. Then again, there is something quite nice about the control you get building from the ports tree in FreeBSD.

    I wonder if it would be possible to build an UbuntuBSD distro now...
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    In other news we're receiving scattered reports of sub-zero temperatures in Hell.

    On a more serious note I've been getting steadily more disillusioned with the direction Ubuntu's headed with all it's customisations. I know that come 11.04 it'll be possible to return to a stock gnome desktop and get rid of the Unity interface, but why waste time when I can switch to Debian and have a nice clean base install without any hassle. I'll certainly be taking this new release for a spin!

    I must admit I'm tempted to fire up a virtual box and install both Squeeze Linux and Squeeze BSD to see what they're like.

    It's been a long time since I've used Debian instead of Ubuntu

    It seams to me that the freebsd varient is a bit slower on the same hardware. it just does not seam as responsive

    Somebody (maybe phoronix) benchmarked it and showed it was slower, particularly the 64-bit version.
