    Google Optimisation

Ok, this is probably a minefield but I'd thought I'd ask if people have any tips to improve your search ranking on Google in relation to specific (relevant) keywords. Our site's layout gives about 35,000 seperate pages, and up until a couple of days ago, the meta data on each page was the same. I've now tweaked it so it generates based on the menu system and product name.

I've also created a sitemap and submitted it via Google Webtools but is there anything else I can do to try and improve our ranking?

There's also an oddity that we get onto page 2 for specific terms, but on others that are nigh on identical we don't appear at all (e.g. bananas is fine, banana doesn't work). Is there something we can change to fix this oversight?

    Re: Google Optimisation

more keywords in the meta tags?

Make sure you have relevant content early in the HTML code, if possible.

Think about using the alt and title attributes for longer descriptions: for instance instead of just alt="Company logo" use alt="logo for Company, a UK-wide distributor of bananas"

If you have any corporate partners ask them to use a specific phrase to link from their website to yours, which might help boost your ranking for those search terms.

To be completely honest, I've yet to find any guaranteed way of getting high google rankings without stooping to some *very* dubious practices - and you don't want to annoy google with anything dubious It sounds like you already know the basics so just keep playing with those until the rankings improve.

    Re: Google Optimisation

Thanks, I knew there was something I'd overlooked, none of our images have ALT data set. Should be simple enough to generate that from the product name

Gah! That goes beyond Google optimisation into failing to meet accessibility standards!!! Yes, get alt attributes set on all images ASAP: not only will it potentially aid your google results but it means people using non-visual browsers will get a better experience from your website

What is the site? There are well publicised rules to follow in terms of SEO, but it would help a great deal to see exactly what could most benefit your site.

Well, an hour and a bit later and it's done and it's definitely put me off persuing a career in PHP coding. Unfortunately our developers took it upon themselves to stretch the term "code reuse" to it's absolute limit, and I had to hunt through half a dozen files until I found the section of code that pulled the image down and created it's URL. On the plus side, the earlier work I did re-teaching myself how PHP works with mySQL was helpful as it meant I didn't have to re-write the function, just run a nested search

BTW, I won't link to the site here as I do try and keep some distance between my views expressed on Hexus and my professional career. Same as I don't post about my job on Facebook or my blog.

Yep, of course that makes sense, I am the same. The idea is that there is well publicised good practice (http://www.google.com/webmasters/doc...rter-guide.pdf), but on the other hand - for example - there may be specific changes to your site that should be tackled first for the best improvements and limit your exposure to practices that may not yield a good return in the context of your site, and therefore save you time and/or money.
