Why is my Win7x64 box really slow to come out of hibernation?

As per title I have a freshly installed Win7x64 box that takes ages to come out of hibernation. Its running a 1TB HDD, 4Gb ram and a Core2Quad. It will get to the logon screen quickly, but will then take up to 5 minutes to display the desktop During this time the HDD is totally flat out. The HDD has been defragged.

Compared with my laptop, which has hardware that is a lot slower, it only takes about 30 seconds to get to the desktop.

I cannot see any issues in Device Manager, it would appear that all my drivers are up to date. There is no software that is running on the desktop that is not present on the laptop.

Is there some sort of log that I can look at that will specifically point me in the direction as to what is making the machine take so long?

Does your laptop have a lot less RAM by any chance?

Re: Why is my Win7x64 box really slow to come out of hibernation?

No, both machines are 4GB ram.

    Laptop - Core2Duo 2.4 Ghz, 4GB ram, 500GB HDD, 128MB GPU, Win7 x64
    Desktop - Core2Quad 3 Ghz, 4GB ram, 1TB HDD, 1GB GPU, Win 7 x64

As far as I am aware the whole point of hibernation is so that the HDD would only load about 4GB of information from the disk back into ram. I know that the disk is SATA2, and can easily sustain a transfer of 50MB/s, so 5 mins is way way over the mark for getting all that data back into ram.

It should also be noted that the time to get out of hibernation does not depend on what the system has been running. It does not matter if the machine is hibernated with just the desktop and no apps running, or a whole slew of apps. The time taken to come out of hibernation does not seem to be app dependent.

Do you have any network drives, or other connected devices which the OS is trying to confirm?

Re: Why is my Win7x64 box really slow to come out of hibernation?

Hmm, the computer is on a network that has file sharing enabled. However, I have not made any network drives, and there are none present in my computer.

The thing that I don't understand is that the HDD is FLAT out for a whole 5 mins during recovery from hibernation. It does not seem to be stopping waiting for something, rather it is busying itself with things that it thinks must be done before I can get back to work

Thanks for the ideas so far, please keep them coming

Disk fragmentation? What's the actual time it takes?

hmm if its getting to the logon prompt, its loaded all the hibernated data into RAM.

it could well be a bug in some software that is making it go nuts for disk IO.

using the performance monitor do-hickey (can't recall the exact name of it, but you can find a link to it in task man) change it to drive activity, put it to hibernate, then wake, log on, have a look at what has changed, or if your lucky what is still hammering the disk, it will tell you the process name.

I do know it was a known issue with Wacom tablet drivers, and it's apparently been fixed in the latest driver updates.

Probably not your cause, but if you've got a tablet, that may be the reason.

Just out of curiosity, why don't you use standby on the dektop? If it's because of power consumption, S3 standby uses basically the same amount of power as when the PC is shut down, maybe 0.5-1 watt more unless you have like 16 sticks of RAM.

Have you tried repeating the problem, but pulling the network cable out as a test?

Re: Why is my Win7x64 box really slow to come out of hibernation?

Some really good ideas here. I will give them all a go and report back once I have a second...having to work late tonight, which means no hibernation.

And yes, the reason that I was hibernating was for power consumption. I know putting a laptop to sleep will drain the battery in about 24 hours, compared with the battery lasting about 3 hours during normal use. So I was thinking the power draw may be closer to the 15-20W mark. I will get a power tester and have a look at that too. As if the power draw is so low, then there is no point in fixing this issue!

Re: Why is my Win7x64 box really slow to come out of hibernation?

Well I got my power tester out and found that my Win 7 box uses 3W when turned off, and only 4W when in sleep mode. I guess this solves the problem, as sleep mode is always going to be faster than hibernation, even if I did fix the hibernation issue!!
