    Reliable Web Host

    hey guys,

I have built a single page html website which is going to be like an online business card kinda deal. Anyways I don't want to pay for hosting if I can get away with it so I need a free web host which is reliable. That is pretty much the only requirement.

The site itself is only a couple kb and will only be getting around 10-15 hits a month so no issues there. I was initially going to try and host it on my dropbox but I can't find a way to redirect to the dropbox file without having hosting. I use evo hosting normally as I find them to be excellent but far too expensive for this purpose.

So yh basically I'm looking for a free host (or an extremely cheap one) which is reliable (meaning little downtime and no spam etc..). You guys know more about this than I do so your recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Re: Reliable Web Host

    QiQ?

They have offers from time to time, often meaning that a years hosting can be had for a fiver plus the cost of a domain name. Standard cost is £19.99 from memory for a years hosting - which I find perfectly reasonable

    Re: Reliable Web Host

I started with QiQ because of their 11p offer and have stayed with them since. Never had any problems and all communications with them feel like I am actually speaking with a person, instead of a person following a script.

    Highly recommended from me

    Re: Reliable Web Host

Qiq seems reasonable pricing however it is going to be a 1 page website lol without hardly any traffic... dunno if I could justify £20 a year just for that

    Re: Reliable Web Host

Does your ISP offer any free hosting space? You could then use domain name masking to make sure the name you want links to your page.

Do you have your own domain name? If so, what exactly is preventing you from doing a simple redirection from within your registrar's control panel? Apologies if I'm going over old ground but I reckon the Dropbox idea makes a lot of sense.

    Re: Reliable Web Host

Thanks for the reply, yes I have my own domain name.
The problem is the dropbox file will be at dropbox.com/user/1231231/xxxx.html or something along those lines and I can't see anyway of redirecting mywebsite.com to the dropbox file so that the url in the browser still says mywebsite.com.
If that is possible then that is exactly what I want but from my understanding it isn't.

Domain names can often be forwarded just as you describe - I did it on one of my websites years ago. Who is your domain registrar?

But is it possible to forward it to a specific address and not a domain ie to dropbox.com/user... instead of just dropbox.com with my url being mywebsite.com/user....

I think so. In your 123-reg Control Panel, go to View Domains, click on your domain name in the list, click "Web Forwarding" under "Domain Basics", then choose "Framed web-forwarding to a single page". To quote what it says there:

If you select web-forwarding to a single page the destination URL can have a specific filename on the end (e.g. index.htm).
So I would try that with your full dropbox address.

I actually just left QiQ, paying more now but I had so many downtimes, incorrect redirects etc in such a short time it really put me off them. I guess that's why they don't give a guaranteed uptime. It was cheap but the financial saving for me didn't outweigh the times I really really needed sites up and they weren't with nothing I could do.

Interesting, I've got monitoring running so I will keep an eye out.
