I dont know much about it but this article shows a pretty cool setup using 12 Via Epia boards running FreeBSD in a networked parallel cluster.

Interesting article!
Why on earth use over expensive under performing epias? Clearly it was an excercise for fun and not power - but still 12 x durons of some sort would have been far more powerful.
Also - why use 340gb microdrives when 256 or 512mb compactflash cards would have been faster, and an order of magnitude more reliable?
Strange choices for someone so technically competant IMHO.

actually, if you look in the bargain basement thread, there's a socket A athlon board going for £9.99 and 1gig durons going for about the same price, could be the basis of an uber-cheap cluster
http://lcic.org/ looks to be useful for linux clustering![]()

Have a look at an os called cluster knoppix, like the normal knoppix its boot from cd but sets the cluster up for you
I have been lookin to build one from 5 duron 1400 machines for a while and think it can be done for about £200![]()

Hmm, if you run linux can you just install any distribution you want and attach it with a cluster software called Mosix (www.mosix.org). That is very useful tool, because Mosix can migrage programs/processes which not is written for clustering. So Mosix splits the program and sends it out to your nodes. To get best preformance i recommend a 100mbit switched network.
My test-cluster of 4 nodes are working fine with Mosix, running Seti@Home with no problems. Go for it if you can![]()

I just like the sound of it, Clusters, sounds cool

wberg - that isn't your clusterEven if you might have put some major work on it...
I'm thinking of using two of my Athlon XPs with a dual mobo to get some performance from my server, try to paint them both to MP 2600+. Clustering is really neat, even though it's pretty useless at home...
Light travels faster than sound. Is this why some people appear bright until you hear them speak?
