    Re: nas o/s

FreeNAS has proved and reliable for me. It looks like the next versions (8) will only support installing to USB stick or Compact Flash - so it may be worth going that route straight off, rather than change things later.

    Debian + roll your own.

Full control of system and in essence you have a computer without a screen.

    Re: nas o/s

I would also recommend Debian, or another full Distro, if you want to be able to do what you want with your server. I'd recommend having a play round with the CLI, configuring samba, using SSH, etc. This looks like a great guide to get you started/give you an idea what's involved.

I would also recommend FreeNAS for the simpler alternative though, while nowhere near as customisable as a full distro, it makes for a great NAS. I'm not sure how true this still is but the FreeBSD implementation of Samba wasn't as efficient as the Linux one, might be worth researching if you're using more limited hardware.

Oh and up to about step 8 gives you a good idea how to get a base Debian system up and running: http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-se...nny-ispconfig3
Step 9 and beyond don't really apply to a NAS system.

If you want something with better browser-based configuration, you might consider something like this: http://www.zentyal.org/

It's based off Ubuntu, which is based off Debian.

    Unraid is very resilient.

Has a good user community, and the more basic version is free - I've been using the middle level (pro) happily for some years - the vendor support is good.

+1 for openfiler, we use it on our kickabout storage at work, the front end is alot nicer than FreeNAS.

But I personally would find a dist and modify it, I went with VortexBox (automated CD\DVD ripping + media sharing) and built my server around that, installed NFS on it, comes shipped with samba, put sabnzbd, transmission, subsonic on there, hid them behind apache's reverse proxy - hey presto, I can download stuff and listen to my music at work
