    8o!! taste hot WineX powaaah!

some peopel may vaguely remember that I've dropped Windows for Linux.

I successfully downloaded, compiled & installed WineX today, a fork fo the WINE windows emulator project designed for games

    and... well... it works!

will give some ingame feedback when i have enough of a game downloaded to test

Good work mate! What distro you using? I cant make the switch myself. I just find XP a little more responsive than X11. You know what I mean? Plus there are some dev tools I use that do not exist on Linux...Most of the apps I run day to day are open source (firefox, thunderbird) or java based (Intellij IDEA) but there's still a couple (MySQLFront which is simply awesome) that I cant really live without.

How much head scratching/googling did WineX take to get working?

    debian sid.

i found the mother of all scripts. download it, chmod a+x on in, run it.

it downloads the latest winex from cvs, works out all the dependancies & warns you of missing packages, compiles, installs, and sets everything up

i had 2 missing packages, and one screwup - one of the missing packages was called flex, so i apt-get installed it. winex then b0rked during compile. a quick google showed i need an old version of flex to compile winex, handily provided as flex-old

Erm, totally off topic. How do you find sound mixing on the desktop?

you mean multiple sounds at once?

i'm at a bit of a dead end on that, but it's one of the few tasks i have left to tackle.

linux has 2 different driver-level sound systems. OSS is the older more "venerable" system, with a 1-program-using-sound-at-once policy, ALSA is the newer, leaner, shinier system which has ousted OSS from its place of prominance in the 2.6 kernels. there are also three sound servers (esd, ARtS, Jack) of varying popularity which allow multiple sounds at once from compatible applications (where most applications support the first two), living on top of one of the drivers. however, a few things, most notably games, do not support the sound servers, hence why i don't use them usually. from what i HAVE used though, ARtS is the best, where Jack lacks support & esd has audio/video desynchronisation issues

i'd like to be using ALSA, but essentially my pc hates me, and simply will not install alsa correctly. if & when i get there, i can give more useful response.

Yeah - it was one of the most difficult things I found to get working under gentoo on my laptop. There's no one de-facto system, so different apps support varying levels of server, which is really annoying. Ho well.

When I get back to blighty and get a new PC I will be putting gentoo on there; maybe I will attempt 1 week of Linux to see how I go...

Very nice, got a link to this script? Will save me from setting it up manually.

Sounds upport in linux is waaaay to complicated, why can't they just use one (or even two) systems,, but no there has to be loads. Getting digital out on my Nforce2 aint esay :/

I think ALSA is slowly becoming the standard, but it is taking time...

you need the http://ting.homeunix.org/cvs_wine/GetCVSWineX_Pthreads version on anything even slightly up to date (deadrat 9, for example, which is pretty old) - or http://ting.homeunix.org/cvs_wine/GetCVSWineX on an antique distro like deadrat 8.x
