i currently own an AMD K6/2-500 (soon to be upgraded after months of saving) and was wonderong if XP home would run on it. my system does fit the minimum requirements (128 ram i think, 20 gig HDD, 8meg onboard graphics) , but don't know how well it will run. At the monent i am using win 98se.
also is there any advantage in buying the full version as opposed to the ungrade version?

thats should run ok (though more memory woudl be better ) - as long as your orig. 98 disks are kosher it should be fine.

just checked have about 196 mb of ram, so you think it would be fine?

Personally I prefer getting full versions over upgrades - as upgraded OSes never seem to work properly - the registry gets bogged down and you get loads of problems. That's just my experience though.
XP is a memory whore, and MY recommended minimum is 256MB of RAM. I don't stick XP on a computer with anything less. However, if you turn off the visual features and don't have programs set to run at startup (and sit in the system tray) then you should be OK.

I would also recommend 256MB Minimum, 128MB is painfully slow
upgrade versions do not require an existing os. start an install by booting off the cd. if you haven't formatted yet, it'll detect the existing os on the disk and allow you to do a from scratch (i.e. full format) install no problem. if there's no existing os on the disk, it'll prompt you to insert an original cd from an approved upgradeable os, scan it, then say "kk" & continue.

ok managed to get hold of some more ram now (248mb). think i'll take the risk and run xp with the visual styles turned off.
i've found a price of £67 (inc. vat and del) on cpucity for the home (full) OEM edition, is this the cheapest i will find it?
also over the summer am building my own computer. with the copy of xp i plan to buy will i be able to install it on my current system and the put it on to the new system as well. the current system will not be used for the internet and if it is i will put 98se back on it. i am a little unsure about the legalities surrounding putting xp on two or more systems. i would like this cleared up as don't want Mr Gates on my back

just a question out of curiosity - how the heck does the software know it is installed on more than one machine? i might be sounding a bit thick, but it's prette clever!
When you install XP for the first time it forces you to register the software online (i think it gives you 60 days to register before stopping working). When you register your copy of XP over the internet your machine specs are transferred to MS. If you install the same copy on another machine when you register that one, MS knows youve registered the same copy twice and a big alarm goes off, and they get the SAS in to make you pay!!!! MAKE YOU PAY!!!!!!!

ah a problem arises!
the first machine i intend to install on isn't connected to the web. How do i install XP on that then, would i have to ring up or something.
