    Ie9

So I just downloading and installed the IE9 RC, having heard some nice things about it's speed and given that I've been having troubles with Chrome recently (shockwave crashing constantly) I thought I'd give it a try.

I install, and get a message that I need to restart my PC.

MS don't bloody learn do they?

Tempted to uninstall without even using it now.

Why the obsession with never restarting? My desktop gets shut down every night, my servers are in no rush for IE9.

    Re: Ie9

IE9 has permanent cleartype, which makes some font sizes look silly - wide spacing between some characters, no spacing between others... horrible.

Apparently the beta had an option to disable it

    Re: Ie9

It is tedious having to restart though. I kinda expect IE and OS level things to require a reboot. I get more annoyed when things like iTunes requires a reboot.

Because I have to stop and save all the work I'm doing, close all the tabs I have open, stop listening to the music I'm enjoying, stop the conversation I'm having on facebook or irc etc etc etc.

No other browser requires a restart as far as I know. Why IE?

Because it's still deeply embedded in the OS, and installing/uninstalling requires changes to the system files which are locked during the OS running. You don't have to restart there and then, just do it at a convenient time.

Why does IE need this type of system access when no other browsers do?

Of course. But I downloaded the RC to see what it was like, to contrast and compare it to my other browsers etc. But it's a hassle to have to restart my computer just to test out a browser, and IMO, is unnecessary.

Because it's still deeply embedded in the OS, like I said. If it's really such a hardship I'd be looking at using either a different browser (which it sounds like you do) or a different OS.

Yes, but why is it deeply embedded in the OS?

I do use another browser, I just wanted to test out the new IE, which I suspect will be exactly what many other users will want to do too. Likely they will be as annoyed as me at having to restart their system just because they wanted to play about with a new browser.

I can't comment about IE9 as I've not actually looked at it too much, but historically IE shared certain files with explorer.exe. If that's still the case then in order to update the relevant files explorer.exe would need to be closed, which is a small problem while the OS is running (sure, it can be done, but it has a tendency to cause a few other things to close too)

Seriously though, it's been this way since Win95. If you're not used to it now then you should try another OS if it's really grinding your gears.

    Re: Ie9

I don't mind the restart as I'll just install it tonight before I switch off, but I find the list of programs it wants me to close if I am to avoid a restart... extensive.

    ATI CCC
    Digiguide
    Directory Opus
    Firefox
    Logitech SetPoint
    Steam
    TeamViewer
    Windows Explorer
    Windows Mail
    Windows Media Center
    Windows Media Player
    and Windows Mobile Device Center

A few of them I understand, as they'll use the IE infrastructure under the hood, but that's ridiculous.

I don't follow your logic. A problem to do with one browser (one of many that are available) means I unhappy. Therefore the entire operating system is unsuitable therefore I must ditch windows and switch to Linux or similar?

I installed IE9 on my work PC out of morbid curiosity.

It closed the explorer.exe shell automatically, and started it again after it had installed. And then it required a reboot. *sigh*

    Re: Ie9

I had to do a couple of restarts, once to have IE8 again, and another to update to IE9. The restarts do annoy me, but i'm used to it now. In fact, i am pleasantly surprised when i install something and it doesn't need a restart.

I'm quite liking IE9 though, its nice and clean, and it seems fast enough.
