    Something Like FreeNas?

    Hi,

I have a spare system sitting around and I am looking at changing it to a NAS, something I can store movies on and stream around the house etc.

I was looking at FreeNAS, but would prefer something I can store on the hard drive.

Does anyone have any suggestions or something similar that would do the job I require?

    Thanks
    Jon

Errr why would you want to install it to a hard drive? Just stick it on a USB stick and you have all your SATA ports free. Mine is on an old 1GB USB stick on an internal USB header.

    Re: Something Like FreeNas?

Oh, FreeNAS said its a running image and if installed to the hard drive, the space on the hard drive is unusable.

And I wanted it installed to the hard drive as where the server will be, the only place, is extremely tight and there is a high chance of the USB stick being damaged or breaking.

    Regards
    Jon

    Re: Something Like FreeNas?

Ah, you want all the HDD space for media, gotcha.

Use an internal USB header as per b0redom's post or run a USB extension cable from an external front/rear/side USB port back into the machine to keep the USB stick inside/safe

    Re: Something Like FreeNas?

Ah right ok, will give that a go.

I assume from what I read that Free Nas would be suitable for streaming movies etc? Its being sent to Windows 7 systems.

    Jon
