    Win 7 lockup....Kaspersky ?

After the tribulations in a previous thread of installing Win 7 on one PC, my own new build has started misbehaving - talk about bad luck !

So, spec is AsRock Extreme4 Z68 with i2500K, 4GB Patriot RAM, Raptor 74GB boot, Samsung 1TB, GTS 250 OC and so on....on a clean Windows 7 Professional install.

The problem is that, as seemingly random times, the PC will just freeze/lockup and the only solution is to hold the power button to shut down. This can happen after 5 minutes, or a couple of hours, and seems to just happen - i.e. sometimes when unattended, other times when trying to perform any given action (examples are: resizing WMP playback window, clicking on a IE window, opening Control Panel and so on - random !).

I have tried removing the nVidia gfx and running from the IGP of the i2500K - this gives a different problem, but same overall result - when it locks up, the screen suddenly corrupts; lots of different colours, like interference ?, but just frozen and, if sound is on, a load of continuous white noise

I have tried disabling everything I can in BIOS; unplugged everything but essential hardware; removed various drivers and so on......to no avail.

Memtest86 run a few times, and no issues.

Event Viewer just gives me Kernel Power error, which simply notes that system was not shut down properly......and there is no consistent event visible prior to a freeze.

Latest attempt to diagnose has involved digging out an old 40GB SATA HDD and installing a basic install on. So, Win7, Office 2010 and critical mobo drivers and that is it......all fine throughout installation and downloading updates.....installed printer driver (MG6150) and still fine......then put on latest nVidia driver.....and lastly Kaspersky IS 2011......and then I got my first freeze !

Interestingly, Kaspersky was difficult to install, and - although it downloaded the latest installer - it gave some message about 'serious problem, maybe infection' and refused to install. I cancelled the installer and tried again, using only the disc and not downloading the latest version, which installed fine......and then my problems started again !!

So, have used System Restore to before the nVidia and Kaspersky install and the machine happily stayed on through the night and no problems using this morning

So.....anyone come across any similar issues ? Certainly starting to think Kaspersksy could be the cause...but not sure why that would be ?!

    Re: Win 7 lockup....Kaspersky ?

This can occasionally happen for some bizarre reason. My mothers new laptop which is Win 7 64 bit just doesnt like Comodo security suite, everything works fine then after installing, it just starts hanging and crashing. In the end had to completely remove it, do a clean install and opted for Avast AV and Zonealarm Firewall. Since then she has had no problems whatsoever.

All I can really suggest here is completely removing Kapersky, set up everything how you want it, and use something else instead of it. You have already answered your question in leaving the machine on overnight without any issues.

    Re: Win 7 lockup....Kaspersky ?

Kinda what I as thinking.....just a bit annoying, having paid for 3 user licence....

Ironically, Kaspersky was fine on mostly the same hardware before.....all I have actually changed is the CPU/Mobo and put on Win7 pro, in place of Win7 HP

So.....probably the safest bet is to go with a freebie solution for now ? Rather than pay for one that might also cause problems.....

Any thoughts on why the freeze/lockup seems to have different effect dependant on gfx used ? Simply freezes as is on discrete nVidia card, screen goes all technicolour and freezes on IGP ?

    Re: Win 7 lockup....Kaspersky ?

You possibly could try getting the driver for the IGP from Windows update rather than the nvidia website. Granted it wont have full support for games but if you arnt playing games its no great loss really. Just thinking outside the box with that one.

I would try this first and if it still doesnt go then try one of the free solutions. I know how you feel with this, I have had to format and setup my mothers lappy 3 times now over the last 8 weeks, 3rd try finally worked it out what was going on!

    Re: Win 7 lockup....Kaspersky ?

Yup, currently the 'test' install has only the Windows Update driver for the GTS 250.....and no Kaspersky......as for the IGP driver, not too sure what is in use - used the mobo CD and also downloaded latest Intel drivers from AsRock support site.....but then a Windows Update one might have sneaked on there since

    Re: Win 7 lockup....Kaspersky ?

Windows update usually has all the drivers you could possibly need (unless it is really old hardware).

It definately sounds like it is Kapersky that is causing your issue here.

After trying the machine with the IGP, if it is working, stick your nvidia card back in (make sure you disable the IGP when you do this) then install the official nvidia drivers and see if it goes ok. If it does you will then know exactly that it is Kapersky causing the issue.

    Re: Win 7 lockup....Kaspersky ?

Well, Kaspersky has been removed and the PC had no issues for around 7 hrs from when I got home yesterday. Couple of reboots for various installations/removals excluded, seems that it is cured !!!
Will reserve final judgement for a few days.....but.......fingers crossed it is solved

I have downloaded (and installed) Microsoft Security Essentials to put my mind at rest - as I am not the only user of the PC; wifety and a 4yr old are less conscientous about what not to click ......

    Re: Win 7 lockup....Kaspersky ?

Know that feeling well with wife and kids.

7 hours into a test is looking good, cant see you having any more issues in all honesty. It is REALLY weird though how sometimes a system just doesnt like certain AV programs.

Yup, agreed on the REALLY wierd bit.....but, as I mentioned, it didn't seem to want to install properly in the beginning....oh well, licence only has a few months to run, so got some value out of it

    Re: Win 7 lockup....Kaspersky ?

I was sooo hoping that removing KIS had fixed the problem.....but no
Next step is to reinstall Windows, but revert controllers to IDE rather than AHCI.....

Have you tried doing a disc check on your hard drive and a memtest on your ram.

    Re: Win 7 lockup....Kaspersky ?

Memtest, yes and all was fine
Disccheck, no, but kinda leaning towards this not being the problem as had a perfect Win7 HP installation on differenct mobo/cpu prior to this OS/mobo/CPU change.
    Still, wouldn't hurt....

There is not much left installed now, removed Nero 10 last night and all that really remains are a handful of video transcoding apps, and an image editor !

In all honesty, I am thinking that go back to IDE instead of AHCI (which, I suspect, I will see no real performance hit from) and clean install....

    Re: Win 7 lockup....Kaspersky ?

kevpuk... I have the same issue. Identical behavior as you are seeing:

    i7 i2600k
    8GB Corsair DDR3 2000Mhz (2x4GB)

I have ruled out the HDD / SSD as the cause of the error after numerous low level disk scans, and full swap out to new disks / modes.

I was reading about a problem with USB support with UEFI on the Asrock web site? Does anyone think there's mileage in that?

Possibly a mistake on my part and not a real correlation, but it seems to be more likely to happen when I have Chrome open and an running streaming video.
