    Windows Scripting

Now I have the Tranquil PC I want to have automated backups across the network, I would like them to sync folders which I have on PC's around the house and make a backup, then each week I would like it to zip the folder - (Only if it has changed from the previous week.)

I would also like it to mail me and put an alert on all of the systems if there has been a problem with this.

    Can anyone help?

To ad to this I would like to have a script which I can run on a new PC which will automatically sync data which is on a set folder on the server, and install certain applications such as office, set the homepage, adobe photoshop, irc, msn, winamp, and setup a heap of shortcuts.

With regards to the config of a new PC, would it not be easier to use sysprep to generate a custom install CD with it all on?

As for backups, MSBackup will do a reasonable job and that can be managed with Task Scheduler.

For zipping and moving files etc you could do it with batch files but it would be better do use VBScript in a WSF file. Have a look on www.devguru.com for some help on the language.

The ideal solution for backups though is Veritas BackupExec which sends an email when there's a problem with a job. You can script a WSF to send an email but you'd need an email gateway installed.

I've got a WSF that does some backups, well if i remember it gzips them, then blats them out via e-mail.

I'll see if i can find that script for you, as its about 18months since i did it.
