More Free NAS Software: Open-E DSS

Just a heads up there is another option for a NAS available, Open-E DSS

I haven't tried it myself. I'm having fun with the free Starwind.

It's working great for reliability but with zero optimisation on my part, an anemic CPU with only one core presented to the VM, no jumbo frames and sharing with other VM's, I'm seeing very low speeds for Vmotion. (circa 10MB/sec)
I'm pretty sure if I can find the time to optimise it I'll see a threefold increase. I've just got to find enough time to tinker. I've had a brief flick through their best practices looking for tips but not done any more.
When I get the chance, I'll sort out RAID properly, thick provision the Image file and have a proper look at it.

you mean SVmotion ? Vmotion doesn't move the data files..

I was thinking about the dedupe type stuff in it ? ( still probably as fast as a FAS2020 )

With a bit of a more considered setup, Starwind is now performing as I expected. It was never going to set the world on fire in an HP microserver but it's putting through decent enough numbers now.
