Prevent IE from saving downloads via user's temp dir

This is driving me nuts.

- Need to download BIG file (http or ftp).
- Have to use IE (cannot use a download manager or Firefox which doesn't exhibit this behaviour)
- Want it to be saved directly in the directory of my choice, not via the temp folder.

Problem:
I have a very big file I need to download on a slow laptop with an ageing hard drive. Because I have to use IE, it will first save the download in the temp directory and then copy it to my specified save directory. This takes an eternity and pretty much kills my laptop.

Is there a way to prevent this so the download isn't temporarly saved in the %temp% dir and then copied, but saved directly where I want it?

No way that I'm aware of. Is there any particular reason why you can't use another browser, even if just in 'pen drive mode'?

Or alternatively download it elsewhere, drop it on a pendrive and run from there on the old lappy?

It's my work laptop and we have a crazy proxy setup. I've managed to get Firefox to work, but only for http, not FTP. Despite having the same config in IE for all protocols, it doesn't work in Firefox and I've also tried with a true FTP client, but there too, can't figure it out.

I've emailed our IT helpdesk but was hoping an "under the radar" answer was possible

cant you drag and drop the file from IE into say Go!Zilla ? You didnt say why you cant use a DL Mgr.

If it's FTP, don't use IE at all, just use Explorer, Open up My Computer, type the FTP address in, and then drag and drop like you would a normal folder.

If that errors, use a Command prompt, type in FTP, then open {ip address}, then your credentials, and then type recv {filepath\filename.extension}
