Can someone tell me how to setup a GTX460?

Can someone tell me how to setup a GTX460 (for folding at home) please - my dad has just got one (he doesn't play games!) - and I'll point him at this thread,

I assume he justs installs the GPU3 client?

    Cheers

    Josh

Re: Can someone tell me how to setup a GTX460?

    Hi Josh,

    First, download the software: HERE

Second, Install it by just agreeing to the license terms, and clicking continue/next. If prompted by UAC, then please click "allow".

Third, configure the client. This is done by launching the program just installed. It goes straight to the system tray, so you need to open up the program by right clicking on the folding icon in the system tray.
    There are 3 tabs:
    User Tab
enter your users details in the field labelled "User Name" and the team number is (for Hexus anyway....) 69776 goes under that.
To qualify for bonus points, which are a significant component of the score you need to enter a passkey which can be obtained from HERE. If he's folding using your username, then enter your name and passkey, if he's using his username, you'll need to enter his username and passkey. The username is used by Stanford to generate a passkey. It's not linked to a user and team combination, just the username.
    Connection Tab
Most people are now permanently conencted to the net, requiring no dial up, so you usually don;t need to set the "Ask before using network" etc fields. The only one on this tab that I ever set is the field "Allow receipt of work assignments and return of results greatd than 10mb...." which I set to ticked.
    Advanced
Core Priority: This sets the utilisation. If left on Lowest Possible it will literally use unused clock cylces and not stress the machine. It just ticks over generating a few hundred points per day. I always set this so that "Lowest Possible" is NOT selected, but that "Slightly Higher..." is checked. This will then engage the slide bar beneath allowing you to specify how much GPU percent is used. Whack this number up as high as your GPU cooling will allow. ie if you put it up to 100% and the card is making too much noise, or getting too hot for your liking, then move it down a notch. The coolers on those cards are pretty good nowadays, but they do make some noise when on full blast.

Disable Highly optimised assembly code - leave blank.
Checkpointing frequency - this is how often work is saved. GPU's have small work units, and the 460 blasts through them, so no need to lower this value.

Do NOT lock cores to specific CPU - leave blank

Core network address - leave blank

    Power - Leave blank

Additional client Parameters - this is where you can add in the switches to access "advanced" functionality. You have a fermi card so enter "-GPU 0 -forcegpu nvidia_fermi" which will tell the program that you are running a fermi based GPU on the first gpu (they are numbered from zero up, i.e. 0, 1, 2 etc) This is critical when adding more GPU's to the setup so if you set it now, you'll never have to change it.

Machine ID - this is the number of the client on that machine. If you have a CPU client installed, then I normally number that 1 as that's usually the highest point producer for me. You don;t need to change this value unless you are installing multiple clients (ie more than one GPU, or a GPU plus a CPU). It's just a number to distinguish between the different clients. LEave it where it is if you're just installing the GPU client. If installing a CPU client as well, make sure that they have different numbers ie 1 and 2.

You then need to close the client, so do this by clicking the X in the top right hand corner, then go to the systray, and then right click, and select "Quit" at the bottom of the list

Re-open the client by navigating via the start button\all programs\Folding@home-gpu and hit the client.....

    Job done!

There are some excellent guides out there. Here's the link to all the install notes on the Stanford site:

Let us know how you get on!

I'll do some pictures to go with this if there's enough interest....

Re: Can someone tell me how to setup a GTX460?

a 460 GTX should produce around 9-11k ppd depending on clock. pretty nice

    EDIT: Source - me

also, worth noting that if your dad is going to use this computer as a general computer, some of the recent nvidia drivers have caused lag on desktop when folding. i had to downgrade my driver to make the computer usable for watching videos etc. (have since taken a heat related break from folding, was too much to bare in my room)
